Didn't he have a choice out of playing for England or Wales by some relative?

Anyway, would have given another option on the left, don't think it would of made a massive difference though

He could never have played for England. May as well ask if Pele was English would we have won a major trophy...

I'm more interested by the question "If Craig Mackail-Smith hadn't played for Scotland..."

Beaten to it, but he might of had an impact at Euro 96 and maybe 98 but since then no.

I think it's more a case of if Paul Scholes was given the respect he deserves by England managers would we have won a trophy in the last 10 years

I doubt it but I think England would have been a vastly superior side if they had the balance a proper left sided player would bring rather than trying to accomodate all the "stars" by simply writing Gerrard's name on the board on the left and thinking that'd do. I can't recall anyone making a proper fist of the position other than Joe Cole in recent times. Indeed, I recall a period when playing our very own LB in front of A Cole seemed the best option.

Who knows. Maybe euro 2004 which was the tournament Gerrard played on the left for most of it.

The team that lined up against Portugal in the q-finals was...

James

G.Nev - Terry - Campbell - Cole

Beckham - Lampard - Scholes - Gerrard

Rooney - Owen

It was Scholes who played out left.
