Swindon, but used to be Manila
Anyone had any good or bad experiences?

Im looking to hire for 2 weeks in Sept....checking on line there is such a variation in prices. I dont want to get there, with a pre paid car and end up having to pay more insurance, (ie CDW) have those days gone? does all inclusive mean all inclusive or do they still try and get you to buy "extras" when you collect the car.

My brother uses car hire in the USA a lot and I asked him he said Alamo is a good company and all inclusive means that but they will try to get you to upgrade to a better car or sell you personal injury insurance which you will have on your travel insurance. Just say no thanks

Alamo is my choice as well. Just be sure to read all the fine print...one time thought my mileage was included in the daily price but turned out it wasnt and i ended up paying double..... Was my own fault though.

My experience of car hire was trying to do it while I was staying in Los Angeles. My wife rang a company recommended by our host. The person at the other end of the phone didn't understand "hire a car." However after some discussion as to what we wanted he suddenly realised that we wanted to (in his words) "rent an automobile".

I've found the cheapest is booking AVIS through the British Airways site - gets you all inclusive/unlimited mileage for about 1/3 of the price I was able to find going through any company directly (and an extra driver is included free if you're part of the BA airmiles scheme).

My brother works for BA and says that Alamo are better than Avis. We are going to USA in July and heas booked the cars trough Alamo, it may well be because he gets a better BA discount from them than Avis.

Hired a car whilst on holiday in New Orleans about 10 years ago.
Remember all went well with no problems but can't remember details of who we used etc.. Just make sure you are insured for all eventualities as Americans do like suing.

Never had a problem and often get a free upgrade they love to smooze so lay it on with the Brit accent, I would strongly recommend a sat nav thou traffic signs can be poor or non existent if you get outside of the towns and cities.

I'm going to the US in september doing a road trip from san fran to vegas. I've been looking at car hire recently for it but unfortunately all of us that are going will be under 25 and im struggling to find anywhere that won't charge an extra $25 a day as under 25 insurance. Has anyone else had this problem and managed to find a reasonable company to rent from or is there no way round this mugging?!

In my experience Alamo were certainly cheap, efficient and had a wide coverage for one way drop offs........hope no one planning to travel has ever been arrested and misunderstands the question on the landing card.........'have you ever been accused of an offence of moral turpitude'?........you'll be send straight back home if you are unlucky!.........

I had the same problem a few years ago pal. There really is no way round the bitch charges, unless things have changed.

That's not a mugging; im surprised it's not a considerably bigger price hike than that.

Dollar is working out cheapest for me this year.
Think I have used most of the big ones and level of service is always the same.

If you want all in, full insurances, full tank of fuel etc, use the Platinum of gold rather than the cheapest price you see.
For what I'm looking which is a family size car for its £298 for two weeks, normal or £348 for the Platinum.

Last few times I've been used Car Hire Auto Europe | Official Web Site and they were the cheapest, prices were fully comp and no excess to pay. I did have a scrape so can confirm there was no fine print to get me. Definitely make your hire from this side of the pond though as even with the driving on the wrong side and being jetlagged we are better drivers than yanks so get stung less for insurance.
