@ granny weatherwax: How wonderful for you!

μῆνιν ἄειδε, θεά.... The beginning of the beginning of the beginning.

A couple-three new translations of Iliad out -- still Richmond Latimore's for me.

As a lad I was planning to study biology in university, but had the unique opportunity to read the Odyssey, in Greek, entire, in my last year of high school.

Went into the year a biologist, came out a classicist. Never looked back.

I have maintained since then, that if I had been offered the chance to learn enough Greek to read Homer through, twice, at the cost of several hard years of study, and then had my knowledge of the language erased, I'd still have done the learning.

Thought you would start at the beginning then?

It's the set book on my OU classics course. It does seem a bit odd, but I think they thought the odyssey was more indicative of homer's composition.

The Illiad is good, especially the tension between Achilles and Agamemnon....a rattling good read

Latimore is the one we use. Very good. I would love to be able to read something in Greek....on the course, CD1 has readings and translations, but one of the course team, a Japanese lady reads Odyssey in the original Greek....to give some idea of the tone and inflection.

Just finishing my first Peter James novel, Dead Man's Footsteps. Really enjoyed it, reminded me of William Gibson's style with the chopping up of the various narratives and timelines.

Just bought Brian Cox's new one with Jeff Forshaw, "The Quantum Universe: Everything That Can Happen Does Happen".

Off to a good start, but I think it's going to get pretty tough...
