He fetched my mother and a next door neighbour and they watched it for about an hour, before it slowly disappeared into the sky as a fading point of light.

Yeah, I was hoping that someone here might have seen it too and been more capable than my old man in the technology dep't.

Yes...all pensioners (with all their marbles, I must add), all still working but do not even own a camera! They buy disposable ones when they go on holiday.

However, there must have been hundreds of others who saw the same thing, considering the time it stayed around. Obviously no one here did.

What makes me laugh is people are so quick to say that UFO or aliens dont exist but christians beleive in a man who lived two thousand years ago, which there is no real evidence of his existance, who was the son of god and died for our sins and is now in heaven with his Dad looking down on us, for other it is other holy gods and despite absolutly no proof of existence miliions of people still beleive and no-one begrudges them BUT the moment someone suggest something plausable like we are not the only beings in the universe they get mocked, I just find that odd

Apparently Earth is going to pass through the tail of a meteorite or comet over the last and next few days. Authorities said people not to confuse particles with UFOs.
Saw this info in paper this week. This could be answer to original question, or not!!!

Just had a phone call from my dad (who lives in Southwick), telling me about a very strange object in the sky - towards Brighton - around 11.30pm last night.

He went outside to put out some rubbish before going to bed and saw an odd light in the sky, travelling slowly towards the east. He watched it for a while until it remained stationary. He went and got some binoculars and could clearly see that it was quite large, spherical in shape and had beams of light inside it.

He described the surface as 'brain-like'. He fetched my mother and a next door neighbour and they watched it for about an hour, before it slowly disappeared into the sky as a fading point of light.

It was reported to the police who took the details. A while later, he looked out again and noticed several plane (or maybe helicopter) lights in the same area and wondered if they were searching for it.

Anyone else see it?

Sadly not - they will appear (if they do at all) as 'shooting stars' travelling at a very rapid rate across the sky, in the region of The Plough (not the pub!).

Not really known to stay in one place for an hour......

Yes, that was suggested earlier ('brain balloon' pic), but I really don't think they'd be up there around midnight. Maybe there is a balloonist here who can say if they are allowed to?

Doubt it as would make landing hard, and the one I went up in was very dependant on wind direction so couldn't imagine anyone going out close to the sea.
