This, Dicker looked like he was playing in treacle on saturday and Sparrow was non-existant for large parts of the game

For me I think we could do with a left back with more pace as although I think Painter is good , he will struggle against tricky speedy wingers and Tarrico as back up is even slower. Also watched a bit of the West Ham game yesterday and noted how Matt Taylor was pinging in the old set pieces, feel we still need more height (and muscle) so would like to see any midfielder over 6ft if possible please! Apart from that thought we looked pretty good although as has been said many times against one of the weaker teams and feel we need to keep the tempo higher just like the second half on Saturday. Good we are playing Cardiff and Blackpool early doors as that will give us a better indication of where are strengths and weaknesses are and where we need reinforcements.

Ok heres what I think just based upon the two games I've seen at the Amex...keepers are fine I think that despite the howler against Spurs Brez is a decent back up keeper.

Defenders- agree we need a LB but only as cover - thought Painter was excellent Saturday and he has played at this level before. Still need another champ experienced CB imho.

We have some good wingers. However one attacking midfielder is a must.

Finally, I'm convinced that we need someone up front with a bit of physical presence in the same mould as "he who must not be named" but who is proven at this level. I really like Barnes & CMS and i havent yet seen Hoskins on the pitch but I thought we just missed that physical element an that was proven by the fact that to my recollection, we only took one direct corner on Saturday.

I'm not totally in agreement here, Dicker worked his socks off in the middle Saturday and a lot of the time when he had the ball his options were non existent, Lua Lua and Barnes were man marked and Donny chased and closed down very well. Its the first game, I imagine the whole occassion got to the players and I expect the levels of performace from the middle boys to improve now that Saturday is out of the way. I also think painter is the right man and its not a position I am worried about, gonig forward in the second half we were awesome so I am not worried there, the only position I think we need to strengthen is the Centre backs.

Can Buckley be the attacking midfielder taking the role of Dicker or Sparrow? For Pompey I would like:

Ankergren

Calderon-Dunk-Greer-Painter

Buckley Bridcutt Sparrow

Noone (Free role)

Hoskins CMS

*Lua Lua to come on as impact sub

Just back from press at Amex for Gills. Gus quite confident about one signing but expects transfers to go right to Aug 31 wire.

Well if Dicker & Sparrow don't pull their fingers out (& pronto), I'd like to see better players to come in & fill their positions. Perhaps Buckley is the obvious shoe-in to replace the latter, but Gary Dicker's performance was abject on Saturday. Who the Hell's available to be our creative outlet though - who wouldn't cost big money?

ps How long is it likely to be before A E-A fully recovers from his bad injury? He'll be a very welcome addition to our defensive options when he comes back innit.

There were two occasions when Dicker was caught in possession which ended up with a goal and a chance. Appart from this, Dicker played his role well, but obviously not up to his normal standards. Sparrow was quiet, but didn't make any glaring errors. I feel pretty safe with them there, but I'd rather that only one played, giving room for another winger/striker/ Bennett role.

I think both are average at this level. First half Doncaster were alot better than us in the middle and we couldnt get our usual passing game going. Dicker looks very slow and has only one trick of dropping his shoulder and going the other way to try and shake off other players. No doubt hes a very good player when he gets time on the ball and is one of our better passers but at this level he's not going to have the time on the ball he had in league 1 and doesnt have the pace to create that space. Sparrow is a good squad player, no more.

It was only when Bridcutt came to the party and ran the show in the second half did we control the game. We cant rely on him all the time and IMO a central midfielder is our first priority.

I was hugely impressed with Dunk and Greer, I wouldnt waste money on a centre half. I would look at getting a young GK on loan as backup and possibly a left back or striker option

Asked him Saturday about his injury apparently broke his foot in the Sheff Wed game but didn't realize and played on. he is hoping to start training in about 4 weeks.

Think Buckley will take the attacking midfielder role as per Bennett last season instead of Sparrow or Dicker, but feel we need another stronger taller defensive midfielder than Bridcutt or Navarro.

Meanwhile, Poyet confirmed that Albion are still in the market for two or three new faces before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

"We are still looking at a couple of players and one of them is a player who takes penalties and free-kicks, that's an important player for us.

"We are in a good position for one of them. The other two, there is always something that comes up. It's incredible.

"One day I think the chances have gone and then it all changes again. They are players who are free and lots of clubs are looking at them. It's about negotiations and I can see them going right to the end of the transfer window."

Interesting.
Anyone got any ideas about good players who are free? That Eremenko could be the setpiece man.

Many thanks for that good news boost BG, I was thinking he'd be out for longer.
