Great song and once everyone gets into the swing of things it will be like the old days, but couldnt help thinking it would have been ideal to have had the lyrics coming up on the screens to get everyone singing. I wonder what percentage of the 20 000 will know all the words and correct tempo.

It's been mentioned before but still a good idea I reckon. Either that or print out the lyrics and leave on every home seat for the first few matches.

But what's more important, in my opinion, is the mention you give to the correct tempo. I know it's been said before but after watching the video from Saturday, I couldn't help but feel that the quick singers were killing SBTS. Ok, we don't need to sing like tenors but slowing it down makes it so much more powerful.

Sorry, but I disagree...

Saturday was a special occasion, we won't have an opera singer every week and it didn't really work with everyone joining in as we are used to a faster tempo.

The lyrics aren't exactly a battle cry and the opposition would have a field day if they flashed up on the big screens:

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way

For we're the men from Sussex
Sussex by the sea,
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men we are we

Surely we want to get the atmosphere before the game to a deafening level so we strike fear into the opposition players and fans, GOSBTS should always be the song that is played to welcome the teams onto the pitch but the haka it isn't.

Nothing wrong with words-they are the words to our ANTHEM. it isn't a ruddy pop song. Opposition fans all use homophobic chants-singing SBTS loudly, and sung by everybody, with the correct words will disarm them.

Tempo? Definitely needs slowing down to the proper speed. Liverpool fans manage it with YKWA, Stoke manage to sing Delilah at the right speed. When did we allow our unique song to get ruined? Perfect time to get it right-new stadium, new era, old way of singing our anthem.

I hear your point completely, yet can't agree.

Firstly here are some of the lyrics without cut or paste used:

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way
So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song, as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

For we're the men from Sussex
Sussex by the sea,
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men we are we:
And when you go from Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the sea.

Oh, Sussex, Sussex by the sea
Good old Sussex by the Sea
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the sea.

As for battle cry argument, its not about specific lyrics, it's about meaning and camaraderie. If you are proud to sing the song, it goes a long way to getting the right emotion into whatever you are singing. This pride and camaraderie will create the right atmosphere which itself will intimidate the opposition if anything is going to.

The opposition will of course find some of the lyrics in the first verse funny – but I really can’t believe we give a sh*t about what they think. We should be man enough to see the funny side to it. And if we’re that worried then drop the first verse. As for the second verse, sounds quite "battle-cry"-like to me.

Also this is hardly “the haka” either, is it:

When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark (etc...)

Seems to create the right effect though.

Now regarding the tempo. We are only “used to” a faster tempo as this is how it’s developed over recent years but, in the end, this will just lessen the impact of the song. It is not just for the beginning when the teams run out as we sing it on and off the whole match. And it’s quite clear to hear the reason it “didn’t work” on Saturday was because many of those singing, naturally sang it too quickly at first. But then it’s interesting to hear how it started to slow down, et voila.

Now if we’re going to be bothered to come up with learning re-worked Palace, erm I mean, St. Pauli songs, then surely we can be bothered to slow down our own anthem a bit to a speed that’ll maximise it’s effectiveness and chances of getting more people singing it.

Another agreement. If you print the words in the programme, most won't see it but having the words line by line on the screen will force many to sing more slowly. Unfortunately it's the clapping rythm which speeds things up, so try to clap slowly in time with the true speed.

Why do we need to clap, Anfield don't clap for You'll never walk alone, West Ham don't clap for Bubbles.

Words on screen is a great idea, I thought it worked well on Saturday, eventually the fast singers will realise the correct speed.

I think it would work well if we sang the verses and 1x chorus slowly, followed by 'altogether now' and the chorus repeated quickly as it is now with clapping. Much like Spurs do.

sing it loud and nice and slow, like when...god forbid...spurs sing when the saints come marching in at white hart lane. you have to admit that something like that would be chuffing beautiful:wink:

My proudest part of saturday was that my 4 and 2 year old were singing along with the real words before the game. I have sung the real words to my boys when they're in their bath each night since they were born (yes I'm indoctrinating them) and we have videos of them doing this (when my 2 year old got a drum kit for his birthday we have a great one of him and his brother strumming a guitar as they sing GOSBTS).

I was already sniffing from Nessun Dorma and Abide with Me and this just topped my day off as I held them both to sing heartily. They were still singing but the realisation of what we'd achieved and their enjoyment at the day left me too choked to continue.

I'm appalled (alright, slightly surprised) that there are some Albion fans who need to learn the words. If you're Albion born-and bred, it should be imprinted in your DNA.

But yes, there does seem to be an enormous groundswell of opinion that says sing it at the correct (slower) temp and has been for ages. So just bloody do it.

I totally agree. I've been to Shite Hart Lane plenty of times due to the fact my employer has a box there. I hate to admit it but "When the Spurs go marching in" can be pretty impressive.

I guess all I'm trying to say is slowly does work!!!

Wherever this thread is going, it needs to be pointed out that the line " and useful men we are we" just has to be corrected on a technicality and should read "and useful men are we" Otherwise it simply doesn't scan !

PS

the song is Sussex By The Sea

NOT Good Old Sussex By The Sea

having the words, either printed or on the screen, until everyone has memorised them is a great idea. Is there a better alternative for getting (22500 minus the away fans) singing the same words at the same time?

At spurs, anfield or wherever, the anthem was learned.

And an idea for those concerned about the away fans laughing at us... don't show it on the north stand screen, just on the south screen - they'll never know!

Daniel, I absolutely agree !

Around three months ago, I got as far as looking at decent male voice choirs in Sussex and e mailed the BBC to establish if they may have been interested in co-ordinating just such a thing.

The reply I got from them was as follows

' '

Moving on, perhaps the club will decide to do something on this as I reckoned it would be terrifying, from an opposition point of view, to listen to potentially 20,000 souls singing a magnificent song at full tilt.

Fair enough, good points from all and I would love to be proved wrong.

Of course, Sussex by the Sea resonates with each and everyone of us... I've been hearing it over the tannoy since I was 6 years old and I would much prefer we have our own original anthem rather than trying to create a "new" song by copying already existing chants from other clubs.

However, I do think it will be a struggle to get everyone singing it in the correct tempo, but lets give it a go. I doubt the club will put the lyrics up on the screen... however, when it plays on Saturday and everyone is singing it verse by verse with lyric sheet or off by heart... I'll be the first to join in :O

So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song, as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.
