What are your memories of your very first game at the Goldstone?

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Oddly enough I was just digging through my programmes and considering recycling them. Not sure I can bring myself to do it. Particularly the first one.

November 24th 1990 vs Millwall. Sammy Nelson took me along with 14 other team mates of my school football team.

We were singing "2 - 4 - 6 - 8. Who do we appreciate?"

Just looking through the programme and the club were inviting people to write in and express views as to the club relocation plans. It's only taken 20 years to get anywhere near the finishing line!

About 1979, standing by the half way line, packed house, mid week, beating Wolves 3-0 .... and yes I was hooked :bhasign:

Leyton Orient at home March 1994. 3 hours before kick off stood outside The Exchange pub on my own (kids wernt allowed in) bored and freezing my tits off. All made worthwhile as i made my way up the steps and entered a packed north stand armed with my milk crate. My first piss at the goldstone is certainly an experience i wont forget.

Seems a lifetime ago now and almost 'not real'. I long to recapture that feeling of a proper home game again.

Done this before, but also remember ( versus York City ? 1963/4) there used to be guys outside selling blue and white rosettes and wooden rattles. Also selling metal badges of various football clubs. It all added to the atmosphere of a big event.

One of the popular songs sung by the North Stand was .."roll out the barrel". Pretty sure there used to be a very large 'Watneys Red Barrel' advertising board on the north stand roof.

The most curious thing..
North west corner - evening kick off - Ian Mellor speeding down the wing - bright floodlights - rain (might be mixing up more than one game here though - it was a long time ago) - crowd - movement - noise - lots of people bigger than me.

Like many, not sure of the opponents, but it was an evening game in 76 or 77. Don't remember the score. Stood on an orange box on the chicken run. Just remember so vividly the orange running track contrasting with the green pitch and the stunning blue and white shirts, oh and cigarettes being lit in the West Stand. Fabulous.

Swind, Dec 1967, went with my eldest Sister into the north Stand.

Remeber climbing the steps from the turnstyle and entering the North stand and how the pitch seemed to glow. it looked so green and the lines so white and straight. Good but goaless game.

Others have mentioned the smell of tabacco and, although I hate smoking, there was something about that smell and also the sight of all those matches being lit around the crowd especially at night games.

Another great smell, especially at night games, was the Clarks bakery, not far from the ground behind the South stand.

I think it was 85-86 v Norwich City at home we drew 1-1 and remember before the game seeing the norwich players getting off their coach with Alison Moyet (All Cried Out blaring from the coach) also getting inc Steve Bruce, Chris Woods autographs but sadly dont remember too much of the game. Think we just played Liverpool away in the milk Cup too
