So many to choose from.
Losing to Southampton at home in FA Cup(Qtr final?) and Watford away(after beating Liverpool) in mid 80's
Notts C in Sherpa Van Trophy in early 90's 1-5 at Goldstone and again in Play-Off Final at Wembley.
They all hurt, cos we had very good chance of winning each of these.

I don't even remember the team we were playing, it was night game in the dark days at the Goldstone when Case was manager and after yet another defeat the majority of the crowd gathered outside the main entrance and stood there chanting and protesting for nearly an hour.

During that evening I really felt that the club was very very close to folding and that was indubitably my lowest few hours as an Albion fan.

Was that when we lost to Sudbury in the cup?

After I'd gathered my thoughts, composed myself and pulled myself together, I went upstairs and beat the living daylights out of the wife.

She was probably asking for it.

I was at that game, and it was pure wankstain.

away at Kingstonian in the FA Cup, that was dire.....

Thats the one i was going to put. Nearly missed kick off due to watching strippers in the pub and in the end wished i had missed the whole game. Mind you last night came pretty close!

IMHO, no amount of big game defeats can compete with any number of the defeats that took place around '95-'97. Because each one felt like it could somehow contribute towards what looked a fairly likely demise of the whole club: the worse we were, the more likely people would give up on team without a ground. Just unimaginably awful.

Interesting point. You're quite right that it was awful, but perversely, every defeat only ever strengthened my resolve.

Probably Darlington. Everyone went mental after that game, I remember seeing the gates on the East Stand geting pulled down, trying to get back in

I think it probably was, Case went soon afterwards anyhow.

5-1 against Stoke was worse than last night (not that I saw last night's game), mainly for the spineless performance, and the fact it was the last match of the season which meant we had all summer to brood over it.

Yup, that one. McGhee should have been out on his ear on the spot for that one. The fact that Doug fuckin' Loft came on with twenty minutes to go, scored with a pitiful daisy-cutter of a shot and promptly got awarded MoM just about summed up the whole wretched experience. Oh, and what on EARTH was that lino thinking of, disallowing a perfectly good sixth goal

Was quite fun ironically worshipping the boy Rooney! Rooney! Rooney! for his hat trick though

There was an evening match against Argyle at the Priestfield - when in the second half someone wailed "Will this nightmare ever end".

Then it all livened up - the highlight being a superb full length diving save. By Rod Thomas.

Pompey

Must have been around 91/92. We were 3-0 down at half time with a certain Mick 'Quim:drink:' getting at least one goal via a penalty. He also returned numerous taunts back into the North Stand which was heavily infiltrated by the 'Skates'. In the same fixture a couple of years later my friends and I were turned away from the North Stand as it was now half full of Pompey, and so went to the pub instead!
