Got snow (the sort that's just floating around in the breeze) and sun here in Uckfield all at the same time currently.

Ha. I believe @Papa Lazarou understands this stuff far better than me. I know enough to understand broadscale concepts (streamers ;) ) and how we get snow into the UK, but I'm only able to read the charts the models spit out at a very superficial level.

Streamers off an easterly / north easterly wind are more common for us here. The holy grail for the SE coastline is for embedded cold air and then a channel low tracking off the coast. IIRC Dec 2010 had a channel low.

I think I'm older than you? In my school days, exactly that happened in Dec 1981 and I think Dec 1980, then there's the famous Friday 15 Dec 1967 when only the Sussex coast got a daytime 12" to 18" of snow from an unexpected blizzard. 200 folk sheltered in the White Horse, Rottingdean including my Nan and Aunt.

Two issues with the early 1980's for me...

1. I was born in 1977, my memories of those years are marginal at best.
2. I was in Australia. Snow was the last thing I ever expected to see when it came to weather ;). Bushfires were a bigger problem.

That latter is why I enjoy it so much when it does snow over here. I missed out as a kid.

15 minutes of proper flumpage in RH16, seems to have reverted back to powder in the wind now

Hoping this continues after it gets dark as it will have more chance of hanging around then you'd feel

Today's snow is a prime example of how difficult it is to forecast snow. The forecast models (even yesterday) were only suggesting the possibility of some transitory streamers (hence no Met Office warnings for snow, only ice). What we've got is both a more substantial, widespread, and much longer lived snow event.

Netweather crew are still looking at next week. 14th/15th is shaping up to have the potential to be significant - current models suggesting high pressure over Greenland way, which would bring widespread cold and snow to the UK.

Eased off here in Uckfield for a bit, but we've just had a heavy enough and prolonged enough shower to turn the local grass white, as well as any footpath that had moss growth. It threatened to start settling on the (wet) road, but it's eased off now so it's all melted away rapidly.

Moderate snow resumed in Durrington. From local weather stations, the temperature is around 1c with a dewpoint below zero. Nice.

Has stopped here for now. Can even see a few patches of blue sky through the cloud cover. Radar would indicate that's temporary and more light snow will come through the rest of the afternoon.
