1.23. If a Ticket Holder does not collect their Ticket for an Away Match, or is otherwise unable to attend an UEFA Europa League 2023/24 match for which they have purchased as Away Ticket, they must let the Club know as soon as possible to return their Ticket. No refunds will be given. Sanctions may apply if the Ticket Holder fails to notify the Club that they will not be attending an Away Match.
it doesn't say that in the email that was issued. - Assume what you have found above is quoted from the terms and conditions line.... - that was NOT on that email...

I did this for Marseille as I couldn’t go due to a work change. I received an email back saying thanks and I won’t be sanctioned for Ajax or Athens. However, guess what, late last week I receive another email informing I could be sanctioned as I didn’t collect my ticket…. So I replied attaching my original email and their original reply, I received no reply. So i phoned supporter services and was told everyone who didn’t collect their ticket got that email and not to worry. So I resent it all again anyway, again no reply.
Now I haven’t received a window email for Athens (I know I’ll be tier 2) so I’m worried I am ‘sanctioned’. Hate to say this but I’ve got little confidence in the club over this. It was inevitable there would be teething problems but it feels like they are over complicating this and making it worse.

Presumably a reaction to the alleged 100 no-shows in Marseille, when the club had no system in place to resell them at such a late stage.
As someone traveling to Amsterdam despite missing out on the 09:03 bunfight I believe 100 or so tickets would have been the difference between me (and my son) getting a pair or not. Therefore I don’t share the opinion that the club is patronising/heavy handed/taking the piss etc.

You’d have thought that in this day and age there would be some kind of system in place that would enable a refund to be issued if the ticket is resold. Not just for European games but Premier league games as well. Surely it can’t be that difficult.
its already in place for home games. when you put your ticket on the exchange - if it re-sells you get a refund......

I'm not sure if there's some crossed wires here.

A sanction would only happen, potentially, if you don't go and you've not let them know. With thousands of Albion fans wanting to go to this game, all they're asking is you take two minutes to email them if something comes up.

1. You then won't face any sanctions.
2. They'll try to give someone else a chance to go to the game.
Yeah, so this was me pre-Villa.

I got the match tickets fairly late on and got train tickets. By the time I’d noticed there was a train strike the coaches were sold out. I don’t currently drive. Therefore I couldn’t go (and missed a 6-1 drubbing luckily).

I emailed the club 48 hours before to say I wasn’t going. I judged that as the right window between trying to get a lift and trying to get tickets back on sale. They were very good about it and I feel I did the right thing.

But….

Unfortunately, the way the world is today, no travel plans can be guaranteed to work and you can pick up a nasty virus, and pass it on, at the drop of a hat.

I trust the club to work out the genuine instances of this but I do think it’ll be inevitable that we get a few very late drop outs for this, for a variety of legitimate reasons.

Indeed. I’m struggling to think why the Exchange couldn’t be used for all sold-out away games.

More awkward I guess….easy for the club to deactivate/reissue tickets under their control, but not so much paper tickets when they sometimes don’t even know when they are going to receive them from the home club. Will hopefully all be much easier when all clubs go digital - the sooner the better.

That is just pure speculation - you have no proof at all that the 100 or so tickets would mean you would have got one.... Why do people have to be accountable or provide a reason as to why they didn't attend a match they've paid to attend. There could be all number of reasons why someone didn't turn up... Why should they have to justify themselves.

By the way, I've never missed a game i've bought a ticket for I've always attended... I have no vested interest in this argument at all, I just think its massively wrong that people need to be held accountable for non attendance... even more so if the club can't offer a refund facility... - I've not know this happenin any other ticketed event ever.. ..Ashes tickets, - Wimbledon, Music concerts, theatre? comedians?, festivals? These all have demand that outstrips supply. Never seen anything like this before and i think its absolute shocking the club are taking this stance.

I advocated for an away ticket exchange for a good while last season. I guess it would need a bespoke software build but I did think we were a club that led, rather than followed.

Paper tickets posted by away clubs (multi-billion pound industry should be ashamed of itself) probably makes this a massive ballache……….

You don’t have to give a reason

What’s more shocking is that in the case of Albion away tickets there is no facility to transfer or receive refunds on these tickets, which were presumably purchased initially with good intent. On occasions I’ve had to let flight tickets go unused, but I don’t receive sanctions from the airlines or need to notify them.

For away games they’d need duplicate paper tickets from the club hosting to issue as resales. Ends up a huge ballache if the whole system isn’t digital (flick through 3,000 tickets looking for the right duplicate) and their ticket system and ours aren’t integrated (which they won’t be).

Regarding the possibility of a sanction surely there’s a clue in the words “could” and “may” giving the club scope to hit repeat offenders harder than a first timer.

totally agree. imagine if Ryanair effectively banned you from buying tickets in the future because you didn't make a flight that you had paid for (and weren't even asking for a refund from).

sorry Sir, you can no longer buy flights from us, continue to provide us with your custom or use any of the other tickets that you currently bought in advance (and aren't even asking for a refund for) because you failed to fly from Gatwick to Manchester. last weekend. it was grossly unfair that Mr Jones from crawley therefore was unable to buy a ticket on that flight and we couldn't sell it again for a 2nd time) to fly with us.....

Please don't use your flights already booked for next 10 months and don't even think about cancelling your direct debit payment, cause that won't work either...

Just imagine that.....

Do think you’re overthinking what these possible sanctions may be.
