[Music] Ren - the most-talented Brighton-based artist since...?

It’s about time Ren Gill got his own NSC thread, I think.

This ridiculously talented rapper/singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer is a long-time Brighton resident (when not undergoing treatment) – and well on his way to becoming a global superstar.

Some of you will know of him. Many won’t - yet. So here’s a primer…

Ren’s a chronically sick young man. ME, Lyme’s disease, mental illness and more.

I’m going to do him a massive disservice if I attempt to cover the history of his illnesses in a few lines, but if you’re interested in the full story, he writes about it on his fundraising page…

And the Mail did an article many years ago...

Alternatively, jump straight to his music, which is often autobiographical anyway…

‘Hi Ren’ takes you deep inside Gill’s tormented psyche as he battles with his subconscious (yeah, Eminem did it!). This MASTERPIECE has 7m+ views and, tellingly, has spawned dozens and dozens of reaction videos and many essays too.

I’ve seen it compared to Bohemian Rhapsody numerous times. It doesn’t sound like it (dur), but is similarly epic (9min 19sec, in fact) with several switches of style.

Start right here. Stay to the very end.

Hard-hitting ‘Sick Boi’, his latest release, gives an insight into some his past treatment (and mistreatment) - er, with a side-order of anti-capitalism.

‘Money Game 2’ has 7.8m views. But probably 100s of millions on TikTok, as the GENIUS middle section – capitalism explained as a 10-part nursery rhyme - became a popular meme. Love this.

'The Tale of Jenny & Screech' is an epic trilogy, brilliantly executed. Great storytelling, with a twist…

He really can sing…

Most of his videos are shot in Brighton. Maybe you’ve seen him busking?

(The latter was with his old band, The Big Push)

He does some ‘interesting’ reinterpretations (not my faves if I’m frank)…

Anyway, that’s Ren, an amazing talent doing Brighton proud. He deserves success – and good health.

I found him recently. 'Hi Ren' is an amazing performance if you really watch it.

Chalk outlines is my new favourite.
Sertraline and a sip of serotonin

A lot of diverse influences shining through in his music. He seems quite original to me, a sure sign of talent.

Nice that I share some musical heroes with him!

Yeh, had never heard of him, but really good. Hard hitting and original.

Huge fan of The Big Push; a regular Saturday Ship Street groupie. I wondered what had happened to them; judging by it being his "old band" I assume that he has gone solo.

Shame. The Big Push were probably the best busking band I have ever seen. I thought they might have been on the cusp of something big. My Saturdays in Brighton won't be the same.

Hope Ren can get himself sorted.

I think his health issues made it tricky being in a collective.

Looks like he bangs out solo stuff between treatments.

Great thread and well done for bringing the attention of a very talented local music artist.
I only discovered Ren a couple of weeks when somebody posted his cover of Bitter Sweet Symphony on Instagram - very clever and upto date cover.
Such a shame he was on the verge of making it big with the Sony record deal, I hope he's over the worse of his illness now, sounded horrific, poor guy.

Have to say that rap is not my preferred musical genre - but hey, a rapper who can play his own backing track - and rather well. Respect! I think it's probably more performance art than out-and-out rapping anyway. Impressed with the guitat playing - loved what he did at the beginning of 'I shot the Sherrif' - in fact that whole song should be on the 'Covers that spank the original' thread!

Anyway, good luck to the lad with his health problems.

Realised I forgot 'The Hunger'. 450+ words in a two-minute rap. No repetition. Crazy skills.

And for those not into rap, another great song/cover medley/guitar masterclass...

Anyway, enough repping from me, I think!
