[Albion] The new manager/head coach - acceptable 'performance' ?

I expect them to commit their LIFE to the club – and the lives of ALL of the staff they bring with them. If they DARE to leave for another football team, they need to get approval – in writing – from at least 50% of the posters on NSC.

I would've been delighted with 12th last season and fee that is a sensible benchmark to stay with. Anywhere +/- 3 places of 12th would be incredible/acceptable but progress isn't solely measured by points or league finish

Staying up is, and always will be the aim of the club, be it on goal difference or by twenty points.

I think realistically we need to reset a bit and look at 14th or above. I don't think the new manager should be troubling relegation as he's taken over a strong squad and there are 7 or 8 truly awful teams this year. The question is how quickly can he get his ideas across and get a tune out of our team. That's the real unknown

I'd be happy with whichever is the higher placing of:

i) Above Palace
ii) 17th

(and actually the latter of those options would be HILARIOUS...)

I’ve written off the top 10 this season. Top 15 will be fine but I’d expect better once the new manager has had a pre-season to really get his ideas, style and any new players in and ready.

This is snakes and ladders folks and we’re on our way to a massive slide. Hopefully everyone gets behind the club and management during this difficult period.

I think it’s more nuanced than just a league position. The absolute minimum has to be 17th, but 17th following a tricky start as players adjusted to the new approach is very different to 17th after some good early results but then limping over the line as results drop off the longer the manager is in post.

Difficult one. We'd all like (I think) for the team to just carry on as they're doing - so yes, a Potter-like manager is an obvious preference. BUT, there isn't another exactly like Potter out there (I shouldn't think) so ultimately Potter-like will turn out to be Potter-lite.
So, the new manager will have to bring his own ideas, sell them to the players, and succeed with his plans. That will inevitably be a bump in the road - and possibly difficult to accept because I suspect many, like me, would just like things (on the pitch) to carry on as they are.

I think TB will want to appoint a coach to maintain where we are, so for him and actually for me, it's still top 10 with a sniff at Europe.

Top post, full of reasonable hope and expectation with a streak of realism... here’s hoping we can all keep the faith during the upcoming difficult fixtures and new era. I agree wholeheartedly and I too don’t like the idea of Potterlite, that will only end one way ... whoever we get will do well to be their own man and take us with them, as GP did, on this new journey.

As it's now looking likely any new HC/manager is likely to be someone who has no playing and/or managerial experience of English football, the winter weather, the lads banter, even English itself and so on...

Well, I was wondering where we (or you) would deem acceptable in terms of our league finish this season? and even next.

I'm stepping WAY back from 4th and would settle for survival - although granted, this would be disappointing... Lest we forget it took a certain 'legendary' head coach two full seasons to realise his top ten credentials.

I hope others can see the logic here, it's going to take time... time... After all the criticism (quite rightly) aimed at Chelsea are we going to be prepared to give it ? ?

Yes, the squad is better than two seasons ago... just ?!? But we must all acknowledge that changing the whole coaching team (thanks Graham) is really going to have an impact.

Patience is indeed going to be a virtue.

Depends on who it is and how the performances look, if we go for someone with a language barrier to overcome, shifting in from another country etc. we have to be extremely patient, if it's someone like Sean Dyche, we will know sooner if it's not going to work.

Staying up will be the aim this season, but preferably not in the we need some points on the last day kind of way. Somewhere between 10th and 14th is fine. Then we go again next season aiming for better.

That might have happened even with Potter still here. We have had some terrible runs in the past couple of seasons but just happen to be in the midst of what might have been a brief upturn that has allowed Potter to trouser 60 million quid. Not for a minute though do I think our overall success is down to him. Tony pulls the strings.
