So Putin has threatened the West with a possible nuclear strike if they get involved, the West is involved are we not supplying Ukraine with weapons, we have all put in sanctions against Russia, so the West is involved but so far no nuclear weapon has been leached.maybe Putin is all talk.

Is that not just a consequence of far more Russian money being stashed in London than elsewhere?

A couple of days ago: "Look, some European countries have stopped a few expensive boats sailing off. When are our shit government going to act?"

Now, it's been stated that the UK have frozen more assets than any other nation, and some try to claim that is only because there is more cash here than elsewhere.

Blimey - tough crowd.

its a highly dubious claim, EU froze more with one bank than counted there. i suspect the UK number is counting indirect assets, i.e. all assts of VTB bank.

I was claiming nothing, I was asking a question, which may hint at my suspicions, but no claim.

But surely the idea is to close down access to as much cash as possible in the short term?

Yes it is, but I am saying that one action taken in London could have a greater effect than 10 taken elsewhere, just because we have more Russian assets in the London banking system, the total does not necessarily mean we are doing more than others.

Precisely. Paralysing the country’s capital reserves is actually far more effective than clobbering a long list of individuals (who will have assets all over the world in layers and layers of private companies and trusts etc that will likely escape sanctions).

100%. Living in Dubai, I know there’s almost as much dodgy Russian money in super prime property here as there is in London. And likely to be a huge inflow in coming days and weeks, as the oligarchs shovel their cash into Middle Eastern property. These kind of people will always find a way to keep rolling around in their obscene swills of cash.

If people doubt this government’s ability / motivation to do the right thing in any given situation, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

For the record, I think this government are doing an okay job at sanctions. Their hands are somewhat tied seeing as they are in bed with the Russians and the vast majority of donations to this government come from Russians.

Al Jazeera's monitor reckons over 10,000 protest arrests in Russia so far.

Also reports Putin approval rating at 70%. But that is the state pollster so lots of caveats there.

I am not saying it is, just that it may be. Like saying we have done more to prevent drug smuggling, just because the size of one seizure from random bag checks turned out to be larger than all the drugs found in another country that checks every bag.

Point of fact, he hasn’t explicitly threatened anyone with nukes. That’s why I don’t think he intends to use them. He would never live down threatening nukes and not delivering on that threat.

This is true. And folk have suspicion over the Russia connections.

This is not say that aren't capable of making quality decisions. And they will at times.

My issue is the constant 'UK has done more than anyone else here and there' It's tiresome. This is a competition.

Johnson’s only comeback is “yes, but look what we’ve done”. No matter how poorly his government are performing.

It's not an either or thing though is it, do both, but also don't have the PM announce we have sanctioned a large number of individuals when we haven't.

Anyone but Marco Rubio...

I think the Russians have bases in those regions anyway and a supportive population. I'm not sure what purpose a takeover would serve.

I dislike Rubio but he is on the US Senate Intelligence Committee.

It has been reported that the missile salvo that hit an airport in central Ukraine today was fired from Transnistria.

So where does that take us ?

A Russian enclave in Moldova has attacked Ukraine.

I can't get my head round what happens next. The Moldovan army attacks the enclave ? NATO troops / planes back them up ?

Putin pushing at red lines again.

If Putin ever gets around to threatening a Nuclear strike it will only be a tactical strike against Kyiv when he realises he can't take it? Very much doubt he'd want the back lash from that either?

It's a " Tough Crowd " mostly because of the " World Beating " bullshit we have been fed by Johnson and his government for the last couple of years.

So many shameless, repeated lies tends to make people suspicious when we are told we are " Uniting the World and leading the way " in the response to the invasion.

This. It’s staggering the amount of chances that seemingly otherwise intelligent people give Johnson.

Yes, all plausible that the Russians fired from there.

Presumably the total amount of frozen assets would be higher if more actors had been sanctioned?

In fact, if both this statement and this are true it massively emphasises how much Russian money is in our system.
