Does anyone know what happened to Zetlands Bakery on Western Road, Hove? It is the best poppy seed bread I ever remember! I am a Brighton girl but have lived in Leicestershire for the last 50 years...

Not sure when/how they went but I do know that my grandad, dad and uncle all worked there in the early 80's.

My missus remembers Zetlands as being at the far end of Western Road and thinks it could be where Grubbs is now (not too far away from Palmeira Square/Holland Road). They also had a shop near the Lanes which was close to a Forfars. Grubbs has been in Western Road 28-30 years at least , possibly longer.

I used to walk from the Seven Dials to pick up slices of strawberry cheesecake from Grubbs for the other half back in 1986 , if they took over the premises from Zetlands in the early 1980's then the timeline is correct.

Bought my 1st Grubbs (double Mexican) in exactly 1980 from present site, down the conveyor lift & a nice game of pinball while you wait...happy days

By the seaside in West Somerset
Zetlands shop was just by Vokins/East Street junction down from the Sussex(?) - they used to sell the most amazing steak & kidney pies - absolutely to die for. They did an individual pie or a family pie that greedy bastards like me could wolf down in a single sitting after a few pints, and french style baguettes and poppy seed loaves before they became common-place (yeah - I realise younger posters won't know that baguettes in England didn't get "invented" until the seventies and were probably only popularised with the explosion of supermarket in-store bakeries in the nineties).

My wife and her mates used to start the evening at The Sussex on a girls night out. Mentioned that she especially liked the pasties from that shop.

Wow! I'm amazed at such a quick reply from you all, us sleepy heads in Leicestershire... I'm starting a business making bread (actually gluten free but that's a different challenge..) and I would so like to know the secret to Zetlands poppy seed baguettes (no, no-one had heard of poppyseed baguettes back in 60's!). Thank you to all that have responded!

You are so right! Poppyseed baguettes were unknown in 50's/60's! Wish I'd tried the pies too!

I'm not an OAP yet!! And no I'm not cpfc??? How is the grass doing at Albion by the way - my husband was IOG (Institute of Groundsmen) Volunteer Groundsman of the year in 2009! But, that is not my reason for the post - I just want to know how Zetlands produced such a perfect loaf!
