Fears of trouble when England face Turkey next month were raised after rioting in the aftermath of Sunday's Istanbul derby.

Reports in The Sun and Daily Mirror claim Galatasaray fans began throwing missiles after they were denied a late penalty against city rivals Fenerbahce in a 2-2 draw at the Olympic Stadium.

Referee Muhidin Bosat's decision not to award a spot-kick caused a five-minute delay and Gala substitute Hasan Sas was sent off for protesting from the dugout.

The trouble intensified when the final whistle blew and riot police had to form a protective shield around the referee.

The Football Association have not taken up their ticket allocation for the crucial Euro 2004 qualifying match at the 50,000-capacity Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on October 11 and have advised England fans not to travel to Turkey or to attempt to buy black-market tickets.

The venue for October's clash has a smaller gap between the pitch and the crowd than the Olympic Stadium.

Can't help but feel that there will be a similar situation as to what happened to those poor Leeds fans. I just hope that no-one is stupid enough to go over there. But then again...it's pretty likely!

I do find the whole thing incredibly stoopid. This game should not be allowed to be played in Turkey, time and time again their fans are allowed to get away with MURDER (literally) yet we get a bollocking for celebrating a goal.

I wish all the real Englishh fans that want to go and do the best of luck getting out of their alive because some of the Turkish fans will be out for blood, not all but some.

I also find the fact that Chelsea and Blackburn play UEFA cup games there in the week beforehand rather worrying.

Fingers crossed that the trouble isn't too bad.:(

It just amazes me that Turkey have not punished for their behaviour so far as said before if our fans acted that way we would not be in Euro 2004. I think it should be played behind closed doors.

Bullshit mate.

There are genuine fans that follow England all over the world, i know its weird but not all of our fans that travel abroad do so to fight, f*** all trouble in Munich was there?

If we get kicked out of Euro 2004 it will not be their fault, it will be mostly the fault of UEFA and FIFA who are two faced pricks.

In my opinion the press have to shoulder some of the blame as they all stir it up. If you travel you must be mad.

at the moment its the small minority who will ruin it for the genuine away supporters.....some people just don't get it - football violence is obviously addictive for some people but if we get kicked out of Euro 2004 - then they've got no reason to travel so they've shot themselves as well as the rest of the country in the foot...

The Tirkish police confuse things furthur, tossers.

From the BBC....

The build-up to England's vital Euro 2004 qualifier with Turkey next month has been clouded by conflicting messages from the Turkish authorities over whether England fans will be welcome.
The English Football Association has warned England fans not to travel to the match, which will take place at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul on 11 October.

And the Turkish FA has backed that line by announcing that England fans will not be allowed into the stadium to watch the match.

However, Turkish police say England fans will be welcome in the city.

The police in Istanbul also say they have had no intelligence from their British counterparts about the numbers of England fans who might travel to the game.

And the Turkish police claim they have not had any clear indication from the Turkish FA about whether English fans who try to get into the match should be allowed in.

There's a lot of history between Turkish and English fans and all we've tried to do is to avoid any potential for trouble in Istanbul

FA director of communications Paul Barber

The English FA have declined their ticket allocation and urged fans not to travel because the country could be expelled from Euro 2004 if there is any more trouble involving England supporters.

However, some are expected to ignore their advice and travel to Turkey anyway.

In addition to the advice not to travel the English FA has also decided to ban players' families from attending the match.

FA communications chief Adrian Bevington said: "We have not taken any decisions surrounding this match lightly and hope this continues to send the strongest message that the FA, government and police do not want any individuals travelling to Turkey."

Crowd trouble

Meanwhile, Sunday's Istanbul derby was marred when fans rioted after the 2-2 draw between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce at the Olympic Stadium.

Galatasaray fans began throwing missiles on to the pitch after they were denied a late penalty.

The refusal to award a spot-kick caused a five-minute delay and Gala substitute Hasan Sas was sent off after protesting from the dugout.

The trouble intensified when the final whistle blew and riot police had to form a protective shield around referee Muhidin Bosat.

I'm hoping to go to the game still, but am relying on old Turkish uni mates to get my ticket, and they've been useless so far.:glare:
