the clue is in the name
I have 3 Windows PCs. A network connection has disapeared. I rang Royal Bank Scotland help desk. 'Windows problem, get it sorted then call back'. I tried to open -<phone and modem options>in the control panel - it did not open?

Tried Pc No2 - I was told there was a problem on there also as it connected then hung in the middle of the connection. I uninstalled the program and it asked if I wanted to delete a shared .dll file. OOOhh Dear! I was told. That shouldn't happen! I installed program and hung as before. You have a problem with XP. I then loaded on the 3rd machine and it worked ok.

So, How do I sort the PCs? I have the latest virus softare.

I have run Norton on a mac; and there is a progaram in Mac OS9 called 'Disc First Aid' this does a simple version of Norton. Is there a 'repair' program in XP?

How do I get the modem control panel back?

I know it's like a worn record; but I really don't have these problems on the Apple Macs!

Windows XP has a basic disk repair tool - right click on the actual disk in My Computer, go to Options (I think) and these something along the lines of Scan Disk for Errors - not used XP in years, but its there, and it works a lot better than even the disk scanner in OSX does, let alone OS9.

As goes the modem panel - Reboot. Also, a network connection vanishing may be down to issues under Network Connections, not Phone and Modem. If a reboot doesn't fix the connection panel opening, you've got a virus.

"Uninstalled the programme" - what programme?

Also, please don't assume I'm a Windows head. I'm an x86 head. Hate Windows. x86 != Windows, same as PPC != MacOS always... This is being typed on a PPC box.

Sorry, are you installing some RBOS software?

Software provided by firms like that are always BITCHES. And usually don't work on Windows XP very well.

I'm going to bed for a few hours at least, so I can't comment any more tonight...

If all these problems started after you loaded software onto these pc's, I would try a System Restore (start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore) to a time & date before you loaded the software. This "should" restore your pcs to their previous working state.

Crap software or software with crap install procedures will destroy most operating systems :(

You seem to have 3 issues:

PC1 - the Phone & Modem icon in control panel derives from a file windows\system32\telephon.cpl - sounds like this file has been corrupted or some dependent dll is missing. A roll-back or repair/re-install is probably the only way to fix [or restore an image backup of working system - but no-one takes backups these days - they blame the OS vendor instead].

PC2 - when the software writer creates the install procedure he/she can define whether dlls are treated as shared in which case this question is put on de-installation. Its usually safe to allow it to be deleted. Your re-installation then just gave same problem as before. It sounds like a modem, modem driver, or telphone line issue. Before I had broadband I had similar probs with a "windows" modem at 56k - a Rockwell/Conexant HCF modem - and needed latest modem drivers to avoid just dropping the line midway.

PC 3 - since its OK you could take a Ghost image and copy the whole shebang over the others! [but only if PC hardware is identical and having backed up own files of course].

If you haven't installed XP Service Pack 2 you might try this - it just might fix the problems as its a pretty big update.

:bla:
