Be the most controversial transfer in recent years?

Worse than Campbell to Arsenal or Cole to Chelsea?

I hope he does leave and maximises his wages as they have a limited career.

I think this will also signal the end of Fergie being manager who should have retired 5 years ago.

If he started playing well again it might be controversial. As it is, it would only be the red tops trying to sell a story who would actually give a f***.

Drive by abusing
Heard Crawley have offered him tems no one else can match.
The clincher though was being told he'd be playing with FDM

In answer to the question posed, I think Rooney to Man City WOULD be the most controversial, because its solid proof of the shift in power between those two clubs.

Campbell from Spurs to Arsenal - joining the bigger club to win prizes
Andy Cole from Newcastle to Man U - joining the bigger club to win prizes
Cantona from Leeds to Man U - joining the bigger club to win prizes
Cashley from Arsenal to Chelsea - the biggest furore was over the tapping up and his inate greed more than anything, outside of that it was nothing unusual

But City taking Rooney from United - that shows a seismic shift in the balance of power in Manchester. Not only has Rooney clearly fallen out BIG time with Ferguson, but he may also be looking on Man U as something of an ailing force now. No big signings any more, burdened with crippling debts, aging players not being replaced. The future isn't looking too bright at Old Trafford right now, whereas at City......

Personally, I'd like to see him go abroad. In fact I'd like to see a number of our 'world class' players go abroad.....just to see if they really are world class and can adapt and flourish in another league. Hundreds of foreign players come to the Premiership and show they can do it....be nice if some of our players did the same.

But sadly, as Rooney does not have the imagination, interest or desire to truly professionaly test himself, we all know it will not happen.

Agree with this apart from Cantona. He left a club that were the reigning champions to join a club that had won the square of bugger-all for 20 years. That was prompted by Wilkinson deciding, in what I can only assume was a moment of temporary insanity, that Cantona was surplus to requirements

Indeed, can't see it. Plus theres the added issue that he is now cup-tied for this seasons Champions League, so any major European club buying him in January wouldn't have his services for this seasons premiere competition.

That, of course, is not a factor for City.

Fair point, but Man U were always the bigger club, far bigger than Leeds despite their recent success at that time. It WAS one of those jaw-dropping moves though wasn't it.

Its all about money, dont kid yourself its anything else. No loyalty with players now. Fergie say " resepct the club". This meants dont sign for Man City Liverpool, Chelsea et al. If he loves Utd as he previoulsy has said, he would do what Beckham did and go abroad. The Utd fans still love Beckham and he loves them. Had he signed for Liverpool/Chelsea etc, different story. Fans are as fickle as players are greedy > IMHO that is.
