Have Worthing Thunder taken over as the Sussex basketball team now? I haven't heard anything about the Brighton Bears for several years now - Infact the last thing I Remember was Dennis Rodman playing for them!!! I fancy going along to a game but cannot figure out how to get tickets, are they even worth going along to see? Any feedback would be appreciated...

Yes the Bears went bust after they promised salaries to players they couldn't actually pay - hence the league titles, Europe and gimmicks like Rodman playing. Worthing Thunder are as of this year in the BBL, but I wouldn't personally be surprised if they end up eventually moving to Brighton too just because it's a bigger market.

Went to watch a game before Christmas got some decent players (Patton) and the atmosphere was pretty good too. I think I paid 7 quid to get in, just buy them on the door!

Didn't that happen before?

To be honest, if you know anything about basketball the standard of the BBL is utter shite. That's not to say it can't be entertaining, but the quality of play compared to pretty much any other professional league is woeful.

The Bears started in Brighton (1973 - 1984) before moving to Worthing and becoming the Worthing Bears (1984 - 1986, 1987 - 1999). They moved back to Brighton in 1999 and in the summer of 2006 the Bears announced that they would be taking a year off from the BBL "in the interests of the long term viability of the franchise".

Owner Nick Nurse was reported to be looking into options for moving the Bears into an NBA Development League or a rival BBA league, but neither options came to fruition.

Nurse moved back to the USA, and with no fellow Directors to take over the reigns the once glorious Bears were no more...
