Does anyone know the official rules on number of hours one is allowed to work in a week, according to the law?

I have been called into work tonight for the 5th night in a row, and now I am told that I may have to do tomorrow night also. Each shift is 12 hours, which would make 72 hours over 6 nights.

Furthermore I am forced to work completely on my own which I'm sure can't be right. If I fell over and broke my leg, nobody would know until I am relieved at 7am the next morning.

I am being paid handsomely for it, otherwise I'd tell them to f*** off, but I'm interested to know what rights have.

the rule is that you cannot work more than 37 hours a week for a consecutive 17 week period. if you have holiday it deducts off of the total so it is very difficult to actually exceed the WTD mate. Sorry if it is not what you want to hear mate. By law they have to allow you a 20 minute break for every 4 hours or more you work and I believe if you are working alone they should provide an alarm that you can wear that sets off an alarm if you find yourself in difficulties although I believe this may only be correct if you are working with heavy machinery.

You musn't exceed 60 hours in any one week. You musn't exceed 48 hours over a 17 week period.

I work closely with HR for LloydsTSB and I have never heard that one mate!! are you sure as standard policy is 37 hours accumulative in a 17 week period?

Health and Safety will not allow you to work on your own as if you have an Accident how will they know you are injured etc,your company is breaking the rules there i am afraid.

We had to sign an agreement a few years ago to let us opt out of the 40 hour week ,but I know for a fact that another law is shortly to be announced but it will only count if you are actually working,anytime you have a cup of tea,take a piss etc it will not count as actual working time,thats the only way around this new Europeon law that is coming into force in the very near future

I wouldn't do it if I wasn't bankrupting the company in doing so. Double pay is quite significant with a wage like mine!

Of course you can work on your own. Employer may or may not have to provide a specific alarm device depending on risk assesment.
