William Richard "Will" Hoskins is a striker who plays for Brighton and Hove Albion. The club equalled their record transfer fee paid when he was transferred from Bristol Rovers in May 2011.

[H=2]Club career[/H]

[H=3]Rotherham United[/H]
Will Hoskins was with Notts County as a youngster but was signed by Rotherham United for £5,000 as a 15-year-old.[FOOTNOTE]Hoskins offered new deal rotherhamunited-mad.co.uk - 6 December 2006[/FOOTNOTE] He made an early impact at Rotherham, when he came on for only his second league appearance as a substitute and scored 2 goals in a win at Wigan Athletic on December 26th 2003. The appointment of Mick Harford as manager in April 2005, with Rotherham's relegation from the Championship confirmed, curtailed his development somewhat, as he was selected to start in the League only once during Harford's reign.

Alan Knill was appointed manager part way through the 2005-06 season, with the club back in League One. As youth coach Knill had brought Hoskins up through the ranks at Millmoor. He named Hoskins more frequently in the starting line-up during the remainder of the campaign. Hoskins repaid the manager's faith when he was the only one of six out-of-contract players to immediately sign a contract renewal at the end of the season.[FOOTNOTE]Will Hoskins, Rotherham United The Guardian - 14 November 2006[/FOOTNOTE] He was offered a one-year deal, and was told that if he proved himself in the first team he would be rewarded with a new contract before Christmas.

Hoskins was in fine form during the pre-season games for the 2006-07 season. A slight injury delayed his start to the season proper, but he quickly secured his place in the starting eleven and was a regular member of the team. By the end of December he had scored 15 goals in 22 appearances, including 7 in successive away games, putting him third on the League One top goalscorers list. He earned the League One Player of the Month award in October, and Steve Claridge profiled him in the Guardian with an estimated value of £750,000.[FOOTNOTE]Will Hoskins, Rotherham United The Guardian - 14 November 2006[/FOOTNOTE] Alan Knill kept his word and offered Hoskins a new contract, but Hoskins turned the offer down.[FOOTNOTE]Hoskins Rejects New Contract Rotherham FC - 18 December 2006[/FOOTNOTE] The new contract would have tripled Hoskins salary.[FOOTNOTE]Hoskins replacement hunt is on!! rotherhamunited-mad.co.uk - 28 December 2006[/FOOTNOTE]

[H=3]Watford[/H]
Hoskins was transferred to Premiership Watford on January 4th 2007 in a joint deal with Lee Williamson. The combined transfer fee was reported to be £1.2million, with £900,000 paid up front.[FOOTNOTE]Watford sign Millers hotshots for £1.2m rotherhamunited-mad.co.uk - 4 January 2007[/FOOTNOTE] He made his debut against Liverpool on January 13th 2007, coming off the bench. Watford finished bottom of the table and were relegated to the Championship.

Hoskins struggled to make any impact at Watford during the 2007-08 season in the Championship, appearing just once in the League side. He moved on loan to Millwall in September 2007[FOOTNOTE]Hoskins agrees Millwall loan skysports.com - 17 September 2007[/FOOTNOTE] and made 12 appearances, scoring 4 goals. On February 5th 2008 he made another loan move, this time to Nottingham Forest,[FOOTNOTE]Hoskins Set for loan Switch Nottingham Forest FC - 5 February 2008[/FOOTNOTE] with a view to a permanent deal at a transfer fee of £500,000,[FOOTNOTE]Will's Hungry For Success Nottingham Forest FC - 6 February 2008[/FOOTNOTE] but after a couple of appearances he endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines with a troublesome back injury. He returned to Watford at the end of the loan deal.

Hoskins finally scored his first goal for Watford against Bristol Rovers in the 2008-09 League Cup tie on August 12th 2008, netting again in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace later in the season. He did make 32 appearances in the Championship, with a further 18 appearances the following season. However, when his contract expired at the end of the 2009-10 season, despite being one of the club's highest earners,[FOOTNOTE]World Cup hopeful Jay DeMerit heads list of Watford players set to be released Watford Observer - 14 May 2010[/FOOTNOTE] he was not offered a contract extension.

[H=3]Bristol Rovers[/H]
Hoskins signed a 2-year contract with League One Bristol Rovers on Jun 25th 2010.[FOOTNOTE]Bristol Rovers swoop to sign former Watford striker Will Hoskins thisisbristol.co.uk - 26 June 2010[/FOOTNOTE] He had a great start to the season and rapidly became a fans' favourite. He suffered a sprained ankle on November 6th 2010 which kept him out for two weeks. Rovers struggled throughout the season and were eventually relegated, but Hoskins enjoyed a successful personal campaign, ending with 17 league goals in 43 appearances.

Despite having one year left on his contract, Hoskins expressed a desire to play at a higher level than League Two, and on May 20th 2011 it was announced that Rovers had agreed to transfer Hoskins to Championship [WIKI="Brighton and Hove Albion FC"]Brighton[/WIKI] on a 2-year deal.[FOOTNOTE]Albion Sign Hoskins BHAFC - 20 May 2011[/FOOTNOTE] The fee was undisclosed, but one source put the initial fee at £500,000, potentially rising to £800,000 dependent upon various add-ons.[FOOTNOTE]Star striker Will Hoskins joins Brighton from Bristol Rovers thisisbristol.co.uk - 21 May 2011[/FOOTNOTE] This equalled the record transfer fee paid by Brighton over 30 years previously, when [WIKI]Andy Ritchie[/WIKI] was signed from Manchester Utd. This record only lasted another 17 days, the time it took for Brighton to secure the services of [WIKI]Will Buckley[/WIKI] from Watford.

[H=2]Awards[/H]

Will Hoskins has won the following awards during his career:-

October 2006: League One Player of the Month [FOOTNOTE]Will Hoskins Rumour.. rotherham.vitalfootball.co.uk - 27 November 2006[/FOOTNOTE]

[H=2]International career[/H]

Hoskins made his international debut when he appeared as a half-time substitute for the England U-18 side against Sweden on April 29th 2004. The following season he made 2 appearances for the U-19 side during their second round qualifying group stage for the 2005 European U-19 Championships, including his full international debut against Moldova on March 30th 2005.[FOOTNOTE]21/03: Will Hoskins Rotherham FC - 21 March 2005[/FOOTNOTE] He made 2 appearances during the 2005-06 season for the U-20 national side.
