why is a friendly called a friendly ?

as a referee, this question always confuses me. because we all know that no matter what game it is players want to win it. (friendlies, cup finals, training games) Also friendlies 9 time out of ten turn out to be nasty affairs with a flair up on the pitch. So why are friendlies called friendlies ?

It has to be approved by the FA and is subjerct to FA disciplinary rules re; Yellow and red cards.

I used to like it years ago when the ref used to go to an offending players bench and 'suggest' that they substituted him.

On Wednesday at Southend a number of layers were 'booked' for nothing the only bad tackle was one carried out by Adam Virgo which was a bit late.

It's called a friendly because it isn't deemed competitive. However the catch 22 being just because its not competitive doesn't make it a friendly.

On second thoughts, dont, 'cause they're confusing Catch-22 with irony in most of the cases from the book.

You've never been to an England friendly then? The players - especially the regulars - often don't give a shit about those.

Also, in most friendlies players don't go in for challenges like they do in 'real' matches - it's not worth the risk.

In fact, fights usually break out in friendlies simply because a player has had the audacity to make a tackle.
