Why does the scoring team have to lose possession?

It has always been like this but why does the ball get given to the conceding team to kick off again?
Wouldn't it be fair and correct to allow the scoring side to restart?

That's what happens in sevens - make for a more interesting game IMO

Exactly! Even in hockey years ago it at least went to a bully off, but in football possession is simply lost through no fault of the attacking team which is bizarre!

But then how would it be fair when a shit team like palace could never get the ball off of us? They wouldn't be able to touch the ball all game, despite how many goals we score

The scoring team has put the ball out of play. So the restart HAS to go to the opposition.

I think there's an element of "we scored a goal, now it's your turn to try to match that". There is a certain gentlemanly attitude to it. I know with the money in the modern game, it creates a 'win at all costs/it's not cheating it's professionalism' attitude, but football, like most sports started much more nobly.

I'll have to create a favourite with this post.

We'll see, we're playing some of the best football i've seen our team play in the last 10 years. If we could defend set pieces, we'd have 16 points.

you do realise that 'defending' is actually a fairly important part of 'football'?

Correct. The ball has passed the byline. Any other part of the pitch it is a throw in or a goal kick to the opposition side.

Bit unusual. An interesting and intriguing football question on NSC :lolol:

Yes, which is why we'd only let 4 goals in in the previous 5 as well as our clean sheet vs Crawley in the Cup before yesterday.

Then again, it was Moxey's 1st game back at Left Back, Gardner is still unfit, and Clyne is injured. So we only had half of our Starting back 4 anyway.

Fair enough.

Similarly, we've played the whole season with a rookie CB, but have still only conceded 4 goals in 8 games, including a clean sheet against a full strength Premiership team.

Would those be the same rules that state each team shall consist of a maximum of sixty five players, and the object of the game is to kick the inflated sheep's bladder to the other end of the village high street, and kick it between the two yew sticks embedded in the carriage track :jester:
