[Misc] Why do toilets have rims?

Despite clocking up several thousand hours sitting on them, I've only just come to ponder this after seeing this ad

It's as if they were actually designed to harbour dirt and germs!

We've been rimless for 3 year's now at CZ house , wouldn't go back

rim allows for the water to come out all round the bowl. rim less sends most water direct down the trap. i suspect the benefits of rim are overlooked, otherwise they'd not go to the toruble of making them (easier to make rim less).

I have recently had rimless toilets installed and though they are easier to clean, I do find the odd spot of water escapes over the top of the bowl when flushed. Not a major issue as it's clean water, unless you're wearing pale trousers as it can look like the dot of shame.

It takes about 10 seconds for our soft close lids to close. You can't be hanging around all day.

I did have the pleasure of using one those Japanese electronic ones in a hotel a few years ago.

My rim had never been so clean.

This is the sort of answer I was seeking. I suppose I should really have asked if rimless ones flush as well as the traditional.
Anyway, Google now thinks I have a particular interest in public toilets...

Why wouldn’t you put the lid down before flushing anyway?

Because without a rim what you would have, essentially, is a puddle (or an infinitely tall porcelain cylinder)
