Would be a joke if it is, though I could easily see some people going for it.

He has absolutely chuff all to do with the Olympics. He just happens to be a (disproportionately) high profile sportsman that the powers that be wheel out whenever they want to suck up to Far Eastern delegates or rich businessmen. Nice bloke, decent footballer in his time, but I'm fed up with his constant presence at these sort of events, and he has as much right to light the Olympic flame as the cast of Loose Women.

Seriously though, I'm with Titanic. It's a world stage so ideally needs someone who's British and instantly recognised everywhere - got to be Beckham.
