Millwall v West Ham must have the most persuasive history, while Pompey v Saints extends beyond the actual football to a civic level of resentment and competitiveness. I doubt most people outside of the south east realise Palace v Brighton is a rivalry.

I tell my friends at university (London) that Brighton are rivals with Palace and they look baffled.

The last two as they have other (non-football) events that have affected the fans which add fuel to the fire. The first two are just locality/football based.

Same (West Midlands). Spent about an hour bringing up as much evidence as I could to convince them as it was doing my head in.

Since 1920 the clubs have met 89 times in league and cup, with Brighton winning 35 to Palace’s 32. This was 2008

Albion v Palace it is cultural (the most intractable)
Saints v Pompey is political
West Ham v Millwall is gang warfare
Derby v Forest is football

Some cultures don't mix

Hammers v Milwall is historical going back to the General Strike of 1926 and before that even.

Saints v Pompey obviously geographical (like Norwich/Ipswich was/is) but probably Armed Services v Merchant Navy element.

Derby/Forest. Clough hangovers. Clough walking away from Derby and getting Forest to 2 European Cups must hurt in Derby stil. Maybe Clough Jnr can heal that.

Palace/Brighton. Venners/Mullers rivalry, plus Sarf London v THe Coast. A lot of people born on the South Coast resent incomers who move down from the Croydon area.

Forest-Derby I'd say.

Saints-Pompey hasn't been played enough to be as big as that one. Same goes for Millwall-West Ham which wouldn't even be on the radar if it wasn't for the hoolie followings of both clubs. If anyone thinks Palace-Brighton is manufactured, well Millwall-West Ham takes the piss.
