First football, now rugby league!

Four rugby league players have been warned they could face a lengthy spell in jail for brawling in Leeds.

Leeds Rhinos Chev Walker, Ryan Bailey and Dwayne Barker, and Rochdale Hornet Paul Owen, pleaded guilty to violent disorder at a previous hearing.

The judge, Paul Batty QC, will sentence all four on Tuesday.

He said: "One thing which shines out loud and clear, and is the real serious aspect of it, is the putting in of the boot to people on the ground to the upper body.

"I think you must understand this court is considering custodial sentences of some length."

The court heard how the brawl began after Owen was "tricked" into handing over his mobile phone to an unidentified woman outside the Creation nightclub.

As he tried to recover it, the Leeds players thought she was being assaulted and set about Owen.

A four minute video of the brawl was played which showed the Leeds players trading kicks and blows with Owen.

At one point Owen is seen to punch Barker to the ground, and as he struggles to regain his feet, is kicked in the head and knocked out.

In mitigation David Bradshaw said Walker was full of remorse and his actions were totally out of character.

Jonathan Carroll for Owen said his client did not go looking for a fight and had suffered a "momentary loss of temper".

David Hall for Bailey said his client "shuddered with shame" every time he watched the video of the fight.

Simon Hickey said Barker was the only one to suffer a serious injury which sidelined him for 10 weeks and hit him financially.

Both Bailey and Walker have been selected to play for Great Britain later this year.

Jailed This Morning!

Three rugby league stars who were caught on camera brawling in a city centre were jailed today.

Leeds Rhinos player Chev Walker, 20, was sent to a young offenders' institution for 18 months, while team-mate Ryan Bailey, also 20, was given nine months detention in a young offenders institution.

Rochdale Hornets player Paul Owen, 24, was jailed for 15 months for his part in a fight which broke out outside a Leeds night-club in July last year.

Another Leeds Rhinos player, Dwayne Barker, 19, was ordered to do 150 hours of community service by Judge Paul Batty QC at Leeds Crown Court.

The judge said Barker had had a limited role in the violence.

Plus white satan's pre-season is warming up nicely:

Brawl mars Leeds defeat at Burnley

A 20-man brawl marred Leeds' 4-2 defeat in a pre-season friendly at Burnley.

The game turned ugly just before half-time when a rash challenge by Leeds debutant Jody Morris on Glen Little sparked a free-for-all which involved all 20 outfield players.

Referee Trevor Leake eventually calmed things down and showed common-sense when he simply called on players on both sides to shake hands and make up.

Peter Reid's side twice came from behind before the interval but spot-kicks from Robbie Blake and Ian Moore condemned them to defeat.

Richard Chaplow opened the scoring for Burnley when his shot crept under Paul Robinson after eight minutes.

Mark Viduka tapped home an equaliser on 15 minutes after an Ian Harte corner but the Clarets were back in front three minutes later when Gareth Taylor set up for Moore to head home.

Alan Smith levelled with a sweet strike before the interval but the home side stepped up a gear in the second half.

David Batty pulled back Blake for the first penalty after 56 minutes and a Michael Duberry handball allowed Moore to wrap up the game 14 minutes from time.

New signings Jody Morris and Zoumana Camara were both given run-outs by Reid.

Viduka wants out, which only leaves Alan Smith.

Leeds are two player exits short of a sure-fire relegation spot. Tip top comedy. :lolol:

Limited role?

There's a good article on page 15 of today's Telegraph about submissions to The Idler website about Britain's worst towns. The results from the votes submitted will be published in October in the form of a "domesday book of misery" entitled Crap Towns - "the 50 crappest places to live in Britain".

Leeds is described as a place of "random shouting and violence".

Mind you, they get off pretty lightly:

Welwyn Garden City - "sucks the daylight out of the sky and the happiness out of anyone who goes anywhere near it".

Reading - "designed to attract glue-sniffers from all over the world".

Sunderland - "not so much a town as a mortuary".

Salisbury - "imagine a city designed by readers of the Daily Mail".

Bedford - "a middle-England vacuum".

Merthyr Tydfil - "like East Germany without the tanks".

Horsham - "a no-fun-zone for old Conservatives".

But strangely enough, there's no mention in the article of anywhere around the Croydon area...

Harsh on Horsham and Salisbury. Horsham has some nice pubs even if it is a bit stiff. And Salisbury is one of the prettiest cities in the country.

The description of Leeds is abosolutely spot on.

The fire engines have to have a police escort to attend any incidents.

I had a New Year's Eve in Leeds in the late 80s, a "unique" experience. After we got back after total random "gumming" in th club where we went, I crashed on the floor while seconds later mate's sister proceeded to get shagged next to me by bouncer from club. Kindly told me he'd "poured the lot" into her. The previous evening mate's (and sister's mum obviously) mum - who had had an interesting conversation with me on our own about her marrying the wrong guy - ended up getting boned on the living room sofa by a "friend of the family", guy in his 20s, tache, jacket sleeves up to his elbow (very of the time up there) her daughter (the "sister") lying on the floor below. Thats how I heard. Since it was her first taste of it for years she had no problem in saying she "wanted filling" from me as a New Year treat. A weird household but something very "Leeds" (or "West Yorkshire" about it all. All getting out of control, when train pulled of Leeds going south I one relieved geezer...
