But the 'Well loved Classic Songs' wouldn't have been well loved classic songs - or even slightly well known - if the cover version hadn't absolutelly spanked the original!

The original, BTW, is a ghastly dirge and absolute pants!

Not a fan of either tbh but maybe it’s the exception that proves the rule.

Most of the originals on this thread are just as good, if not better, than the versions that got the plaudits

After the Stevie Wonder thread I hesitate to post a “was Johnny Cash overrated” thread. I think he was personally

It proves the rule that many folk post in these threads without bothering to read previous contributions...

Exception? Hardly - my first contribution ('Girls Talk') was a vast improvement on a turgid and forgettable original. Then there's this one which blew the original out of the water...............

....as was this one ...........

....and this one (although perhaps a bit more marginal) .

Terry Jack's' "Seasons in the Sun" was originally written and recorded in the original French language version by Jacques Brel originally entitled "Le Moribond"...

https://youtu.be/6Jl-R2NhUiI

After achieving success with that Brel composition Jacks returned to Brel's musical catalogue and had further success with Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" which Jacks recorded under the title "If You Go Away"..

The Jacques Brel “Ne me quitte pas” is just wonderful. One of the most achingly beautiful songs there is in my view in his own version.
