I really hope he makes it. I have never meet him but know some people who are mates of his and from seeing him interviewed it appears that he is a very nice bloke. Treated the Albion with respect and made us a lot of money. I hope this is the start of a great career at Celtic for him.

"Man of the match Virgo revelled in his name being chanted by the Celtic support who admired his no-nonsense approach as he steamed into tackles."

Quote from the Daily Record. I love no nonsense players (fair ones like Virgo) and the fact that one of our own is having his name chanted by Celtic is great. Actually makes me quite proud.

MOTHERWELL… 1
(Hamilton 41)
CELTIC… 3
(Zurawski 17, McGeady 71, Hartson 85)

AIDEN McGeady was the match-winning substitute today as Celtic exorcised some of the traumas experienced in past matches at Fir Park with a creditable 3-1 victory.

The young Irish international scored within minutes of his introduction in the second half with the score at all-square and then, in the 85th minute, set-up John Hartson for the third and conclusive strike.

With Roy Keane having suffered an injury in training during midweek, regular centre-half Stephen McManus suspended and Bobo Balde presently on African Nations duty with Guinea, Gordon Strachan was left to assemble a makeshift defence from his remaining personnel.

Stan Varga made his first start for the team since the 4-4 draw here at Fir Park on the opening day of the season and was partnered by Adam Virgo, a player who has appeared in a variety of positions since his move from Brighton, yet was making only his second start in a Celtic jersey.

Taking this relative unfamiliarity into consideration the manager opted to hand new signing Mark Wilson a place on the bench and give starts instead to Paul Telfer and Mo Camara at right and left-back.

And Camara’s inclusion was perhaps justified within three minutes, when he cleared Motherwell’s first chance, a header by Richie Foran, off the line at the back post.

There was in fact a lightning quick start to the game and it took Celtic just six minutes to respond to this chance, with striker Jim Hamilton required, at the Motherwell near post, to head away a curling Shunsuke Nakamura corner.

With both sides looking vulnerable when countered, play continued to ebb back and forth until Celtic exploited the abundance of riches that they presently possess in attack to grab the opener.

The goal came in the 18th minute after Celtic had worked hard to win possession on the right of the midfield. Play was quickly switched to Shaun Maloney on the right, who laid the ball off first time to Stilian Petrov.

The Bulgarian met the pass on the turn and pushed a beautifully weighted through ball into the path into the path of Maciej Zurawski who looked up from inside the box and hammered a low shot beyond the fingertips of Graeme Smith and into the bottom corner.

Celtic almost added to this goal in the 25th minute, when Maloney curled a set piece from around 25 yards out just inches wide of the post, but gradually Motherwell began to forge their own opportunities.

First Scott McDonald had appeals for a penalty waved away before he squandered a Jim Hamilton cut-back inside the box and as a frustrated Motherwell side flew into tackles spurred on by an enraged home support, it looked as though the match was in danger of boiling over.

But Celtic however stuck to their gameplan and looked to have weathered the storm, that was until Jim Hamilton produced a spectacular equaliser with just four minutes remaining.

Over the years the journeyman has become known for the physical presence he brings to the game, but his volley on the turn from the edge of the box was a technically perfect and will no doubt stand as one of the greatest in his long career.

Celtic did respond well in the remaining minutes, with John Hartson almost beating Smith with a header from a Maloney cross, but it was all square as the referee’s whistle sounded.

The game then restarted in the same blood and thunder fashion and in the 54th minute former Celtic reserve team captain, Kevin McBride, raised the ire of his former supporters when he went down easily in the box, appealing for a penalty.

Referee Charlie Richmond rightly waved away this second appeal and in the ensuing minutes Motherwell enjoyed the better possession but found themselves up against a defence with had quickly developed a fair understanding.

Adam Virgo was looking particularly strong in defence and succeeded in this half in nullifying the physical threat of Hamilton and the Scotland Future Team-cap played a major part in getting Celtic’s second goal.

The chance came in the 71st minute and was sparked by an excellent challenge from Virgo at the back which allowed him to break out of defence, head for the halfway line and lift the perfect ball over the Motherwell midfield to Aiden McGeady.

The young substitute had time to look up and had options, with Camara in particular having made room with another lung-bursting run on the left, but McGeady opted to shoot and saw his 22 yard effort deflected up over Smith and into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Scott McDonald succeeded in getting beyond Varga, only to send a free header wide of target and Celtic countered, with McGeady getting involved in angry exchange with both Martin Corrigan and Stephen Craigan after being challenged from behind.

Perhaps spurred on by this and with five minutes on the clock remaining McGeady got by his marker again on the left, skipped past a second crude challenge to get to the byline and laid off the perfect ball to Hartson who rammed it home emphatically.

With minutes left on the clock McGeady came within a crossbar’s breadth of exacting further revenge, but after doing so well to break through the back line and into the box the teenager saw his dipping drive rattle back off the woodwork.

However, both he and his manager will no doubt be satisfied with the player’s contribution and this result will have said much about the character and strength of this newly built Celtic squad.

A quote from on their fans:

"I saw him in the flesh (no not in way) when Brighton played at Leicester last season.

Now I know it's hardly the heighest calibre of fooball but he had a great game as a makeshift centre-forward."

The championship is certainly a higher calibre of football than the SPL!!!

Good to see Virg's did well though. I'm sure he can cut it there if given the chance.

I'm behind you!
On and off of the pitch the boy is a man. He is destined for greatness.

Every best wish Virgs. You're sorely missed at Withdean.

(No need to go knocking on the manager's door now.)

Funny you should say that, a mate of mine went to Ardingly college with him and said exactly the same thing i.e top bloke who bleeds blue and white. Would like to think he'll make it big, hopefully get a move away from that green shite and then finish his career off with us.
