Hello all.

I sit in the Itchen stand, pretty equidistant between the away fans and the dugouts at St. Marys. I would like to share my views of todays game with you.

Obviously, impressive number of away fans.
First half was quite dull, neither team really threatening the others goal.
Second half was more open from a Saints point of view.
As soon as Saints scored, I never felt that we would lose the match.
Having seen the goals on SSN it looks to me that Fonte was outside the area when fouled for the first penalty.
Assuming Taricco was sent off for his comments to the ref, he should know better and has let his side down.
The ref was bad. For both teams.
Ashley Barnes seemed a dirty player when he came on. Left his boot in a couple times and looked to foul rather than win the ball.
Craig Noone impressed me, very tricky player.
Liam Bridcutt also played well, particularly in the first half.
Craig Mackail-Smith was a bundle of energy.

One incedent I thought was class. At 2-0 Saints fans near me were singing 'Poyet, what's the score, Poyet Poyet what's the score' when he was in his technical area. Gus Poyet looked at that section of the crowd, made a two and a zero sign with his hands to the fans and shrugged at them as he continued to look at them. Thought that was brilliant. Of course some fans then chanted 'wanker, wanker' but a load just laughed and applauded him.

A very balanced view that good luck for the rest of the season (Except 2nd Jan of course )

Thank you, and you. I'm gutted the away game is during the Christmas period as it means I probably won't be going. It was definitely a ground I wanted to do this year too.

Nice comments....we will take the sending off as an assumption...given the refs display he probably got sent off for asking him the time of day....pity you will miss the AMEX...but then again it's never easy to watch your own side get beaten so you will be spared that :)

PS...Lambert top player

The ref raped us, but I guess you probably would have beaten us regardless.

One thing I would be interested in your opinion on, Southampton Guy:

We came above you last season and then spent MORE than you in the summer.

Why do you think you have taken to this new division so much better than us, and what has changed from last season that has led to you being better than us, rather than the other way round??!

1. Our manager.
He is a figure of hate on this site, but what Adkins has done at Saints is phenomenal. He had no preseason with Saints, taking over during the season turning them from a team that was drawing/losing games it should win, to an energetic winning team that wins comfortably. Also we have a knack of finding a way to win when not playing well. Then this year he had an actual preseason and our fitness and togetherness and style of play has been too much for most teams we have played this year.

2. We already had more than one formation and style of play.
We can play a flat 442 whereby our two strikers and wide men interchange very fluidly confusing defences, or a 442 diamond with Lallana in the middle and the full backs providing the width and crosses.

3. Spending.
Spending does not guarantee results, last year on this website many Brighton fans claimed the reason you won the league was because although Southampton had the better individuals, Brighton had the better team. I would respectfully claim that Saints' better individuals are now very much a team.
The fact you brought in more players than us (I think this is the case) means you have less of a team and more individuals, until they blend over time etc.

A fair view SouthamptonGuy, even given the dodgy decisions, it is painfully obvious that we would have lost today. I wasn't at the game to be fair, but did watch it live via an internet stream. I was content to go in to the break at 0-0, but as soon as you scored I knew it was all over. You have a big physical side, which serves you well in the division. I think you will be playing in the Prem next year, and as I really don't count Saints as a local rival, so I wish you well except for the return game in the new year.

Agreed a draw was our best hope, on another day with less injuries we might have got something. Hopefully we can make a better game of it come January. I think Saints will be in the Premier League next season for sure, chalk and cheese compared to West Ham.

Ref was crap(look on saints website at the gallery and there are some pics of the ref, looking weird). And our first penalty, from the SSN camera, was not a penalty. It should have been a free kick. I did think that Lambert was fouled, by being held and pushed, during crosses into the box at least once either side of half time though. In fact I thought we were fouled inside the penalty area so many times, it almost felt embarrassing appealing for a penalty again and again.

I don't see Brighton as rivals, but there was definitely something 'extra' in the build up to this game. I like Gus, he is a character. I by no means agree with his many of his views, but I do find him entertaining.

Hahahahaha, No, just out of his depth in this league. All happens too fast for him.

Never mind he is only 22 as Gus keeps reminding me. He will be an Average player in 5 years time.
