Club captain Patrick Vieira has ended the speculation surrounding his future by deciding to stay at Arsenal Football Club.

The 28-year-old midfielder has explained to Arsenal.com that he was considering a move after eight highly-successful years at Highbury, but in the end, his ties and love for the Club were too much for him to leave.

“I am staying at the Club,” Vieira told Arsenal.com. “I’ve spent the summer considering my future and a possible move to Real Madrid, but my love for Arsenal and the ties which I have here were too strong for me to break.

“I am proud to be captain of the Club and I’m looking forward to achieving my football ambitions with Arsenal.”

Patrick also wants to thank the Club for their patience and understanding during recent weeks and his decision is purely down to his desire to stay at Arsenal.

---personally i thought he was gone but surely arsenal must be favorites again. they have the same squad as last year but with reyes looking even better.

Owen's going to be Real's next galactico - Benitez

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed that Michael Owen is definitely leaving Anfield for Real Madrid.

Benitez explained he has been powerless to hang on to the England striker, who has been lured to the continent by Real with just a year left on his Anfield contract.

Benitez, who replaced Gerard Houllier as Liverpool boss earlier this summer, said: "When I came here, he [Owen] had one year left on his contract.

"Real Madrid knew that, and when a big club like them come knocking, you can't control it."

Reports on Thursday night suggested Owen might be heading to Spain for £8m, with midfielder Antonio Nunez likely to move in the opposite direction to Anfield.

And Liverpool have confirmed they expect to receive a cash sum plus Nunez as part of the deal.

"Michael will have a medical with Madrid before the deal is completed," added Benitez.

"I was very happy with Michael and I wanted him to stay. The problem was he only had a year left on his contract. Real Madrid started talking with his agent and in the end it was an impossible situation to control.

"The money from his sale will be used to balance the team. We still have good forwards here and a good team. We did our best to keep him but, as I say, in the end it was a difficult situation for us."

Confirmation that Owen is to leave comes just two days after the departure from Liverpool of his fellow England player Danny Murphy, who has gone to Charlton.

England forward Emile Heskey was another notable summer transfer from Liverpool, moving south to join the Reds' Premiership rivals Birmingham.

Benitez can at least console himself, though, with the fact that Liverpool captain and midfield lynchpin Steven Gerrard resisted the overtures of cash-rich Chelsea to stay at Anfield.

Vieira's full of crap, Arsenal offered him more money than Madrid, pure and simple. It was well documented that Real weren't prepared to make him a Galactico, with the accompanying wages. Arsenal upped their offer to whatever it is, hence he stays.

If he really was as committed as he claims to be, these Madrid stories wouldn't surface again, year after year.
