Wilkins backs under-fire players
By Andy Naylor
Albion manager Dean Wilkins has defended his players after another home defeat.

Fans' frustrations at the Seagulls awful run of results at Withdean boiled over both before and after the game.

Some of the players came under fire during the warm-up, as well as after the final whistle as a 34th minute goal from Billy Paynter kept alive Bradford's hopes of beating the drop.

Wilkins said: "The players are absolutely devastated, obviously because of the result, but partly other matters as well which I won't go into at the moment. One thing is for sure, these players care deeply, regardless of what people might think at the moment.

"They are young men, they are learning their trade in a very difficult environment and they care deeply about the game and our club, so I am proud to be part of the group.

"Certainly as the game went on the players looked a little bit more edgy. You can make your own assumption as to whether that is helpful or not."

Paynter nodded Bradford's winner after a bright start by Albion. Wilkins said: "I thought in the first half in terms of getting from box to box we were outstanding.

"Some of the quality of the football and the movement was excellent but we failed to deliver in the final third. We are not scoring anywhere near enough goals and the goal we conceded was from a set play which I always hate seeing."

The Seagulls' third defeat on the trot dropped them a place to 16th, six points clear of Bradford in the relegation zone.

Albion's youth team lost 1-0 at home to top-of-the-table Gillingham.

That exactly is the reason why Wilkins should never have got a contract offer

Absolutely. Plenty of sets of supporters would have been a damn site more vociferous a long time ago. I don't hear much stick at all during the game, but there are some disgruntled noises at the end of another poor home defeat. Considering that run of home results, its the least I'd expect.

It's great supporting the team away from home. There's more of a ...well...kinship amongst the travellers. And really, the away team is nearly always the underdog,so expectations are optimistic rather than realistic.

But good as the away support often is (its a grand day out and all ),it's the HOME results that matter most to most fans, and it is the HOME results which draw/fail to draw the crowds.

Our inept home results and the inability of those in charge to reverse the dire trend result in the whinges read on this board. And it is to be expected.

So,in paying peanuts we have got our rewards.

Our squad is weak,we are bleeding money (green, not blue and white) we cannot attract players or afford anything better than we have.

Worse than all of those usual suspects, though,is the lack of spirit, and an apparent blindness to the basic purpose of the game. You can change the names of the leagues, the nomenclature of the officials, the number of substitutes, the points awarded, and so on and so forth.

But the game still has simple...er...goals.

When at home the team should attack relentlessly, enthuse the crowd.Get down the wings and behind the opposing defences.Even try direct stuff, but for heavens sake put the opposition under some pressure. We might still lose, with our current squad we would probably lose more than we win,but for gawds sake go down fighting.

We are too timid, and appear to be devoid of ideas.

It is painful,goal-less and pointless.

Bloody expensive for what you get, too.

Booing or slagging a team or players before kick off is the absolute pits imo, why even bother to go..pathetic.
