Using CVs to eliminate candidates for interview: advice needed!

Greetings,

I've been asked to narrow about 12 people down to 2 or 3 for interview for a summer internship (placement). I have all the CVs to look through, but it's so hard to put any of them in the bin.

I've not done this before, and I'm not sure I should send out invites to all 12 - that's not the idea, although it would the fairest way!

Any advice?

I once had to do something similar, except with pre-formatted application forms as opposed to CVs.

The first thing I did was to eliminate the two people who hadn't bothered to fill in the box marked 'Name', so maybe that would be a start point?

From there, as Ben Andrews' Girlfriend said, the next step is to look at spelling, grammar and how-well the CV has been put together. Someone who has clearly put time and effort into their CV should get consideration over someone who has put theirs together in 10 seconds flat.

Invite them all to send in photos of themselves - most people can tell a twattwattwattwat when they see one
Which is part of the reason why inviting them all for interview has an appeal. That way everyone gets a chance.

Something that concerns me is that just because someone made a simple spelling mistake, we miss out on a good person.

How soon is now?
Morally I guess you're right, but have you got the time?? I did the interviewing process a few years back and after the first one its just f***ing dull. Same questions with pretty much the same answers....
Agree to meet them in the pub, if they get there and offer to buy you a drink thats gotta be a plus, if they expect you to buy them a drink, buy the them a drink but instantly rule them out........oh and don't forget to keep all the receipts, you'll need them for expenses!

Your plan is flawed unfortunately.

These are all college/university interns, thus most are aged 18-20, and under the legal drinking age, which here is 21.....

Nice thought though :drink:

Mind you on a positive note I have now found a drinking establishment which serves PINTS of cider :clap2:

Marvellous scenes.

when I had the interview for my new job I asked one of the panel if he had read my CV? To which he replied no.

Best advice throw them up in the air and pick the two that land on top, then employ the person you get on with best at interview.

P.S. Avoid northern monkeys :jester:

Yeah, do all 12. It'll take you a couple of days but beats working aye? It's crap to mark down people for the odd spelling mistake, personally I'd be wary of anyone who bangs on for three pages of a four page CV about their hobbies. THAT'S the freaks you don't want working for ya.

But if they're all good, then simply introduce the tie-break: 'Which team do you support?'

:goal:

I have no idea why employers ALLOW candidates to submit CVs.

The best way to recruit is to send applicants a detailed specification of the person you are trying to recruit and then ask them to describe why they want the job and how close they come to meeting the person specification.

Then you can score the applications objectively. And interview the top 2 or 3 (or however many you want).

Tell all applicants that anyone who responds by just submitting a CV will be disqualified.

and intern idol was born.. vote off the weakest link each week..

calls cost £1 regardless of the fact the winner may have already been chosen, as he/she has slept with the boss.

mobile calls may vary, your statutory rights are nor relevant.

Cv's i think are a con.You can easily spice them up and you wouldn't know. It's best really to narrow it down and then meet them in person. That way you can see how they present themselves or come across.Always give a job to a Brighton fan.Don't employ someone who lives on a ruff concil estate or from Croydon:clap:

pick 6 CVs and chuck em in the bin... you don't want to hire anyone unlucky! :)

WRT spelling and grammar mistakes, if the person is dyslexic then its not really fair on them.

Throw out anything over 2 pages long.

The way we do it is to set the criteria you are looking for usually based on experience, skills. Identify skills etc that are essential and those that are desirable. Score the CVs against those (1-7) and select accordingly.
This means that you can give reasons why you haven't selected people, if they ask.

I work for a public body so applicants can ask to see all our notes etc. so we have to follow a strict process
