Having watched the goal again on Seagulls world the goal isn't offside. Both United players timed their runs perfectly.....

Using an Andy Townsend style tatics truck outside the ground I have been able to create the following.....

Has the ball been played yet?

I didn't think it was one of those two who was in question - was it not the bloke who came back further left and played the cross in?

Must say when i saw it on TV I thought it was OK. Its one of those ones where the defence and attack go in complete opposite directions at the same time and it makes it look so offside. Its just that often the lino will call it because of that split second.

Looks like from the picture that the ball has just been played.

sadly their goal came from a slight mix up between Knight and Virgo when the latter played the ball behind leon a quick break and bingo the guy in front of me (captain birdseye) was insensed with Virgo but in all honesty it was a good break away goal.

Offside methinks

Saw it on the Championship on Sunday and thought it was offside. My daughter was in J block with Danny Cullip Lookalike and, when the goal had gone in, she phoned me in the North Stand to say the guy was clearly offside.

The offside was during the initial attack a few seconds before the goalscoring opportunity came about.

Correct - two players a good few yards off-side and the linesman no where to be seen.

Thought it was off at the game, but It was definitely onside having seen the video several times.

Andy Liddell timed his run perfectly to get in behind Mayo - then put in the cross for Shaw. Sadly, Mayo's lack of pace made it look like a bad decision.

NZ and Wilka are spot on. I abused the linesman all game and afterwards but remarkably it was a great decision from him and those of us who had a go at him were clearly in the wrong.

Credit has to go to the two Utd runners who timed their runs absolutely perfectly. Almost telepathic play with the guy who slotted the ball through.

Can't agree with the criticism of Kerry, Harding is the guy in the picture above, and neither, or any defender for that matter, could cope with well-timed runs like that. Perhaps we could have done better once they were in behind us in picking up Shaw, we looked stunned by the lack of flag and lost concentration, but you have to credit the Blades here for producing the play that could do that to us.

I'm pleased with Wilka's detective work because at the time I thought we had points robbed off us. Clearly in hindsight the Blades deserved their point and we should be satisfied with ours.

Poor defending for the goal IMHO. Defend properly, i.e. go with the runners, especially that close in on goal and block off any opportunity. Relying on the vagaries of a lino sticking his flag up at the right moment is leaving too much to chance. Keep the play in front of you and deal with the threat.

Having said that, the interpretation of the offside rule was changed a few years ago to benefit the attacking side and to give greater chances for goals to be scored, which is what the watching public demands (I can give you a contra argument to that view, but I'll let it pass). The pundits and punters still bemoan the 'dodgy offside goal' but that is precisely why it was introduced.
If the ball is going towards your goal and your defenders are heading in the opposite direction to their forwards, it's asking for trouble.

And another thing..... did you see the ball boys to the right of the goal as Currie struck his goal? Definitely a question of the speed that light travels as they all seem to jump up at slightly varying times moving away from the ball hitting the net. Clearly a lesson in physics which can be used to attract all those budding scientists the media say we need...

So, if it was a group of ballboys in the plumetting lift, how many would survive?

When I saw the goal on ITV on Sunday, I came to the conclusion that the lino was spot-on. But what do I know?

That's when H block started shouting at the lino. I think the defenders thought so too and lost concentration which then allowed the attack.

Mayo is in between the two attackers. You can just see the top of his mop.

It was a great run, but a quicker defender might recover. It was also Mayo caught out by Furlong the other week. He's been an excellent player down the years, and still puts in some good performances but there's no denying he is very slow in a central defensive position.
