Been visiting friends and family this weekend in Manchester - they are playing this afternoon. When I ventured into Manchester shopping yesterday afternoon I have never seen so many ppl wearing footie shirts. Every other person was wearing either a city shirt or a united shirt.

Do you think that footie is more popular in the North than down South? I think it is - I got chatting to a fella on the train back from town yesterday and he was asking me about Brighton's new stadium and he knew all about JFC seems he is the talk of the town up here!!!

I'm just setting off to the airport to fly black down to Gatwick - got to get across Manchester first which should be fun with this game today!!!

I used to live in Liverpool. There's no doubt in my mind that footie is far more popular up there. It's been heartening though to hear more people speak about us now with our relative success and Falmer etc.

Yes but Liverpool / everton are top flight sides so the passion would seem more.
The same for Manchester. I wonder if they would be as passionate if their fortunes took a dip. After what this club and its fans have been through you can't tell me there's no passion down south. Myself and people I know live for football and can't wait for Saturday to come. That is all.

In my experience the most fervent fans are the Geordies. I have loads of relatives there and whenever I have visited the first thing anyone talks about, when passing the time of day, is the form of the football team. The whole mood of the place is defined by their results.

I agree with you. I am simply saying that almost everyone you talk to, whether they are old, young, female, male, is interested in football. I've no doubt that if they had thirty years in division three then their enthusiasm would wane. But the reality is one of two clubs almost never out of the top league, winning trophies etc. I don't think the op meant anything hypothetical in the question.

And yes, some people down here are equally fanatical!
