C4 last night - UK 1980's music hall of fame.

Beasty Boys? Public Enemy?
No Jam, Madness, Duran/Human League or Happy Mondays.
This has got to be a joke.

I realise that people have different opinions & it's hard to choose just ten artists from a decade, but in my view any of the above acts were more popular in the UK than the Beasty Boys or Public Enemy, or was it just judged on hype/media exposure?

Didn't agree with REM either.

this music hall of fame is a joke
this weeks was a joke as much as last week

the thing that wound me up that they called the writing talents of the smiths better than the beatles you are having a laugh

the 60's should be intresting.

to many groups in that era just to select 10

To be fair Morriseys writing is very well respected and a shit load of musicians still regards him as their biggest influence, especially American bands. The Beatles wrote 'Pop' songs.

I thought that programme was a pretencious load of old bollocks last night. I tuned in to get all misty-eyed about Wham and Kajagoogoo, and ended up getting bored to death by some sub-editor of NME droning on and on about the social influences of The Smiths, or how "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is the best ever song in the history of the world, ever (as if he'd never even heard of Tight Fit's 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight').

I turned over and watched Lee Evans.

Just enjoy the memories and don't get too het up about the glaring omissions. Its just the opinion of a few.

As already noted where are The Jam and Madness and will the Stranglers get a mention? I doubt it!

Being a bit of a rock fans i'd also query where are Iron Maiden (80's peek but still selling well today), Metallica (90's Black Album is No34 in the top selling albums of all time) and of course AC/DC (80's peek but still stadium fillers now and 'Back In Black' is No6 in top selling albums of all time).

In respect of last night i do rate The Smiths but the key point is that its trendy to like them!

I ad the argument about what defines pop music the other day with a mate. It's a tough one. The Smiths were pop because they were popular but I thnk their music had a bit more depth than most 'pop'.

REM - Didn't really breakthrough till the nineties did they? Out of Time was their big record and that was '91.

Joy Division - not convinced, unless you incorporate the new Order stuff too. Ian Curtis died in May 1980, five months into the decade.

Beastie Boys - great in the nineties/naughties - shit in the eighties.

Replace those three with any of the Stone Roses, The Cure, The Jam and Duran Duran.

I thought Public Enemy deserved their place though.

Had anyone hear heard of Missy Elliot whilst we were in the 90's????

Yup but she hadn't done anything yet. he did a tyune with MC Lyte in about 97 but was hardly known then. Didn't make a realy splash until about 2000 I think.
