"Sky were very helpful in allowing delayed transmission for the England v Italy game in 1997 where England qualified for the World Cup and we are asking them to be helpful again," an FA spokesman said.

Why would a delayed transmission stop England fans from wanting to go ???

Because currently it isn't scheduled to show on terrestial TV. They want the BBC to show the game with a delay so everyone can see it. This would presumably stop you saying "Oh I haven't got Sky and I don't fancy the pub, so I'll go to Istanbul instead.":glare:

I watched that England game at the pub (Lottbridge Arms for you Eastbourne boys) and I don't remember it being on any kind of delay. I thought it was in real time, otherwise people would have taken their pocket radios to the pub, surely?

It depends on the delay, doesn't it. Five or ten minutes would be ok, though you might hear other people cheering at the wrong time, but an hour or more is pointless.

I think they want it to start on the BBC as the second half starts live on Sky.

Cheshire I think it might be safer going down the pub. Actually that might depend on what pub it is.

Like watching Football In the Font last year, half of the pub being on SKY and the other on ITV digital which was about 3 seconds behind the SKY,

was very amusing coz you joined in the cheering before the goals went in !!

I thought we were away to the fishmongers that day, Oh well assuming I can get a ticket it just means I'll have to take a 2 hour drinking break (probably a good thing!!!!).

Well, how about a few of us meeting up after the game to watch England then??

Ah, I see, i thought it meant a delay on the actual 'live' broadcasting

I take it it actually means a delayed broadcast on terrestrial - abit like when they show the whiole Champions League game of say, Arsenal v Real Madrid at 3am becuase ManUre are playing Spartak Vloadikavkaz at home (and are already through) and they want to get it on at 7.45.

Sky television has agreed to sports minister Richard Caborn's plea to allow England's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey to be shown "as live" on terrestrial television.
Sky has said it will listen to "any reasonable offer" from the BBC, ITV or Channel 5 to screen a delayed transmission of the game in Istanbul on 11 October.

Sky paid £3m for the exclusive rights to the final match in group seven of the European Championship qualifiers.

But Caborn wrote to Sky chief executive Tony Ball, claiming England fans would be less likely to travel to Turkey if the match was shown on terrestial television.

This should not be seen as a precedent - it is a one-off for a particularly sensitive match

Richard Caborn
Ball's response came as the English and Turkish football associations were meeting with Uefa about security measures for the match.

No official England tickets have been offered for sale.

Caborn said: "We are very grateful to Sky for considering our request and I hope a commercial deal can now be done.

"However, this should not be seen as a precedent - it is a one-off for a particularly sensitive match.

"It also shows Uefa that we have been acting responsibly and doing everything to make sure that England's participation in the European Championship finals will not be put in jeopardy."

The package may allow a terrestrial broadcaster to show the entire game from the final whistle or even with only a 45-minute delay.
