Is it much easier than coming in from Brighton if I'm looking for a train at about 1830? Heading back from London and thinking about going that way to beat the Brighton station queues.. anyone have experience of it?

The train down via Lewes is definitely a smoother option/there isnt any queuing but there are significantly less trains leaving LDN to play with.

As long as you are organised i would go via Lewes all day long.

1647 or 1719 to Ore or Eastbourne, they are platform 16-19 at Victoria, splits at Haywards Heath stops at Lewes

Takes just over an hour and will give you plenty of time,

May be full of Palace muppets though!

To be fair any train from LDN to Lewes or Brighton tonight is liable to have at least a couple of Nigels on it, but i wouldn't be too concerned about them tbh. I think the Ldn Bridge to Brighton service will be much worse for our dear inbred friends; they'll think its a good idea/quicker to go into brighton and then try to come back out and i'm not going to break it to them that this will seriously impede their pre-match drinking aspirations.

Having done both Victoria->Brighton->Falmer and Victoria->Lewes->Falmer, I would go via Lewes EVERY time. I've got the 17:35 to Lewes a couple of time which gets me to the ground about 7 o'clock

Are the Brighton to Falmer services really such a nightmare then? Am coming down early from London and planned to go to Brighton for a bit (I usually go via Lewes). What time does it start getting busy at Brighton station?

definitely - did for the sunderland game and hardly had to wait any time for a connection at lewes. much easier and cmore comfotable than cramming onto a train at brighton

I suspect the queing system will be even worse at brighton station than it was for the Liverpool game , with more police floating about conscious of an increased threat of disorder as a nasty smell settles over brighton.

Lewes to Falmer should only take about 5-10 minutes tops

Only time I've gone from London via Brighton was the Liverpool game. Got to Brighton about 6.40 and didn't get to ground until 7.30

When I got to Brighton, the queue for the Falmer trains came out the side of the station (behind WHSmiths) past the taxi rank and the end of the queue was about where Marks and Spencers is.

Oh, and they don't let people off London arrival trains straight over to the other platform. You have to leave the station and join the queue.

Via Lewes on the way there, via brighton on the way back... any other way is pure madness (IME)!
