He's really got your goat hasn't he?

I'm sorry but everyone that berates him for turning his back on the country can f*** off (in a nice way) if you ask me. If you really cared that much about England you'd be out there watching in the stadium and cheering em on in person.

Come on Chappers, we're not going down the old road of "you're only a true fan if you go to all the games" are we ?

Given the choice, I would LOVE to go to every England game and cheer them on in person. Sadly, the reality of finances and holding down a job means that is an impossibility. But if my responsibilities (and bank balance) allowed me to travel the world following England from country to country, taking the family along to loads of England games as well, then I'd damn well do it.

Thats a bit irrelevent to the argument about Scholes though anyway.

I know, I'm just rying to be a bit wankerish this arvo. The Scholes argument is ridiculous. How can anyone really know why he retired? I don't, I just think I know and can see where he's coming from. You don't and think that he's being selfish by retiring.Fair enough. Wrong, but fair enough.

We can't know, but it never stopped us having an opinion on 1,001 subjects on which we know f*** all about before.

I do know Paul Scholes, having played cricket against him in 1992 when he played for Newton Heath, and can categorically state that the Ginger Tosser carted me all over the park, but did sign an autograph afterwards (he was in the Youth team that year, but everyone knew he was mustard)

10 possible reasons for Scholes retiring from England then:

1. He wants to spend more time with his family.
2. He's been playing shit and so scarpered before being dropped.
3. He was starting to get a bit of stick in the media and thought "sod this then, I'm off".
4. He's pissed off with Eriksson playing him out of position.
5. Its sometimes a bit hot in those summer tournaments.
6. He keeps on missing Holby City.
7. He's not keen on the new away kit.
8. Gerrard keeps taking the piss out of his ginger hair.
9. Owen Hargreaves keeps touching his bum in the shower.
10. He simply can't hack it.

11. Constantly criticised by the British tabloid press because he went through a dry patch goalwise although he was still playing as well as he was before.

Do Shearers list, see what you can come up with for him..

1 (and only reason) Wanted to extend his club career.

I'm 100 times more pissed of with Shearer.

Ahhh, diddums. Did the nasty wasty men at The Sun write some howwible things about you ? Awwww, come and have a wickle huggy-wuggy....

Bollocks. Any International worth his salt would have stuck a podgy middle finger up to the lot of em' and rammed that crictiscm straight back down their stinking gullets.

And as for Shearer - I too was disappointed when he called time on his International career. However, he has the more valid reason of having had to come back from two career-threatening injuries which would have finished a lesser player than him. The strain on his battered knees of playing for club and country would have seen his performances for both end up suffering. Different scenario to Scholes completely.

f***ing hell! There's no arguing with you over this is there?

How do we KNOW that Shearers knees can't take it? He's played EVERY game for the Toon for ages, surely a few England games in a year wouldn't make a lot of difference at all??

I respect Scholes for making a very brave decision and just think people are extremely pissed off because there is nobody there to take his place.

Ah the Scholes argument, one of my favourites. I am with Chappers on this and do you know what we missed him on Saturday. I guess you do not see these things when watching it on the TV, but we had no runner from midfielder drawing players out of position in the way Scholes did. In all that time he did not score for England he still created space through his runs to allow others to and this was not happening on Saturday.

Somebody was banging on, I think on page 2 about wanting to see an attacking left midfielder playing. Well I think Sven does as well, but until you could find him one, it is as you are. Bridge and Cole got in each others way, both playing in the fullback role. For Christ sake, Kenny Sampson had more attacking nouse than Bridge.

James was at fault for both goals DTG, his positioning on the first one was out, why was he standing nearly behind the wall, they are there to protect that part of the goal, him the other.

Anyone saying that Defoe should be starting, watch him, not what you see on TV, but watch him live. He will not make it as a regular international due to his lack of movement. His movement is not good enough, players like Owen and Rooney are at this level as they are a couple of passes in front of others in their brains. Defoe like Vassell does not do this and too often gets his head down and runs, with being aware of what is around him. Yes he hit the post at the death, but too often he got caught in possesion. The next one to make an impact will be Carlton Cole, for the U21's the previous night he did all the things Defoe cannot do.

Its not just the England games themselves - its the training in between as well which causes the additional strain. Now though, when England meet up, Shearer has the chance for a bit of mid-season recuperation instead. He made a professional decision that he could no longer physically do himself justice at both International level and Club level, and that seems pretty understandable being that his knees are already f***ed after christ-knows how many career-saving operations.

Scholes is just a cowardly custard who can't be arsed with it any more.

I'm not arguing with that at all. And I'm not disputing Scholes's value to the England team - I too thought he was unjustly criticised for his lack of goals, when essentially thats wasn't really his job in the team - it was a bonus when he was scoring for England, but he brought far more to the table than just his goals, and he didn't deserve all the flak when they dried up.

You'll never see me saying that he wasn't good enough for England. He most definately was, and still is. My beef with Scholes is the fact that he's jacked it in when he's in the prime of his career. Now that is his perogative - its his career, its his life, and he has his own reasons. But my opinion of him as a professional has dropped to zilch as a result of his decision, and I still feel he has let England down.

Agree with that. Carlton Cole could be one of the most dangerous players England produce for a long time. Tall, pacey, skillful and has a great eye for goal. I just hope he's given the chance to show it sooner rather than later.

The only thing I noticed on Friday (when I could be bothered to leave the bar to watch the Under 21 game, on the terraces) was that he does have a similar to touch to Andy Cole, ie it looks a bit iffy, however he also has the ability to somehow still retain the ball nad with coaching this will be sorted.

I also thought Pennant looked the business, shame that he plays on the right as well and that he does not get enough of a look in at Arsenal.
