im a seagull currently teaching in thailand for six months.

yesterday i was in seven eleven in my remote thai town when i see Adam Virgo in full seagull strip taking up the entire front page of a thai newspaper.

obviously i bought the paper but as the paper was in thai i had absolutly no idea why virgs was slapped accross the front of the paper.

i took the paper to school this morning hoping the thai english teachers could translate. unfortunatly their english is not all that great and all i could get out of them was the the squiggly thai letters accross virg's chest said 'brighton and juventus.' surely virgs isnt on his way to juve?

next i took it to my students, who are often much better at english than the teachers, they translated the paper telling me that yesterday brighton played turkey in a exhibition match.

i didnt quite believe this either so i eventually got on to the seagulls website and it all began to make sense when i saw yesterdays game against torquay.

hopefully il get a picture of virg's front page spread up soon.

so there you go Torquay v Brighton is big news in Thialand, who'd have thought it

That's a typical Thailand story, it's the most bizarre place on earth, after Hastings of course :glare:

Way back in the pre-internet days when I was backpacking around Asia and had to use Sports Roundup on the BBC World Service to follow Brighton from afar, the Bangkok Post was second only to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post in terms of its coverage of lower league English football.

I never did figure out why, but I was very grateful.

Which reminds me of a story a few years back from The Guardian of all places about a group of Chinese tourists who had gone to the travel advice center at one of the London rail stations. They'd gone to find out about traveling by rail to Turkey so you can understand their confusion when 6 hours later their train pulls into Torquay station.

I don't believe that ANYONE in South East Asia is interested in the fortunes of English lower league football teams.

Betting on the outcome of matches, on the other hand ...

Worthing
Many years ago Lonnie Donegan was taken in for emergency heart surgery and this created a panic on the Tokyo stock exchange when it flashed up on the ticker. The interpreter had assumed 'Lonnie' was 'Ronnie' and 'Donegan' was a misprint for 'Reagan' so the story became one about the US president.

Im sure he said I dont believe that ANYONE in south east asia....

Yes, he did, and yes, technically you are right. All the same I doubt very much that it is with people such as yourself in mind that this newspaper has printed this front page. In fact I'm struggling to think of any reason why they've done it!
