who are your favourite footballers ever, never to have played for brighton (or whoever you support)?

1. Matt Le Tissier- Almost single handedly kept Southampton in the premiership for a number of years, scorer of some utterly SUBLIME goals.

2. Tony Yeboah- For roughly one month he was simply the best player on earth, that goal against Wimbledon was just ludicrous.

3. Gianfranco Zola- The player everyone wants to hug despite the fact that he's well ugly.....a lovely little flair scamp

4. Jose Luis Chilavert- Utter flair icon, Jose captured the worlds imagination with some erratic goalkeeping and his bizarre free kick taking ability.

5. Marcel Desailly- Speaks the best english ever and was an absolute beast on the pitch

[Herne Hill Seagull]

1 - Gianfranco Zola; played the game fairly with a smile on his face, and absolute quality.

2 - Paul Scholes; despite my loathing for his employers. In a team full of arrogant whinging tossers (particularly the Roy Keane era) he just does his job and keeps his mouth shut. The way he handled his international retirement exemplified this - by the time the announcement was in the press he was back home, and said nothing further.

3 - Alfonso; a quality player in Real Betis' best ever side. Unbelievable feet, never got the recognition he deserved.

4 - Trevor Sinclair; I've always had a soft spot for QPR and his overhead kick against Barnsley remains the best goal I've ever seen. Ridiculously skillful.

5 - Le Tissier; stayed at an unfashionable club because he was happy there and the team revolved around him. Never went to one of the big boys for shitloads more money, which the press and large numbers of fans couldn't understand, but which elevated him in my estimation. Superb player too - watching him in a Brighton shirt in a testimonial one summer was terrific.

Edit: Christ! I'd forgotten about Cantona's 'moment of clarity' in an otherwise irritatingly self absorbed career. He'd be my five-a-side sub for that alone.

Braders - Fowler was an enigma for me. A man who loved his club sufficiently to re-sign for them without even reading the contract apparently, who scored goals for fun, who supported working class people and got into trouble with the authorities for doing so, who tried to tell a referee at Arsenal that he hadn't been fouled for a penalty. Most fun of all though, was holding up four fingers of one hand and two of another, representing the total European Cups won (at that time) by Liverpool and Man Utd, while being taunted by the Utd fans. This while he was playing for City!

However - he also taunted Graeme Le Saux about his sexuality in front of millions of people and simulated snorting a line of coke as part of a goal celebration. Ill-considered at best, downright boorish bollocks at worst - I can't work out what to think of him.

1. Dennis Bergkamp, first love in football, still the greatest man ever in my opinion

2. David Beckham, the most famous man in China, so much could be said about him he's such a legend.

3. Dwight Yorke, had a kid with Jordan and basically abandoned it, what a player. Didn't pay for Sundeland last season but was still in the national team somehow!

4. Gazza, such a good player on his day, liked a few bevvies fair play to him, just a massive icon of the English game.

5. Paulo Maldini, top the world for over 20 years, one of the greats.

Bobby Charlton - Anyone that could score from 30 yards with either foot using a ball that heavy must have been something special.

Garrincha (sp) - Just watch the footage of the Sweden world cup final

Stuart Pearce - he thought it was an honour and privilege to have the chance to play professional football. Hard as nails.

Tony Currie - the first player I saw on the telly and connected with, I thought "I want to be like that".

Eric Cantona -sublime talent, passing, crossing, shooting, the best.

Maradonna - just his skills, awesome.

Paul Gascoigne - one free kick he took for Spurs at Pompey and for that goal against Scotland.

David Beckham - IMO the most influential player ever, both on the pitch and off.

Maybe not the best of all time, but all players I've seen either live or in plenty of matches, not in just one World Cup game or TV programme when at their peak playing snippets of football. How can you say someone you've seen play once or for 15 seconds is your favourite?

Garrincha - the rest of the world might vote Pele as the greatest Brazilian footballer. The Brazilians plump for 'Little Bird'.

Ferenc Puskas - reminded the English just how breathtakingly arrogant and ignorant we had been for the previous 70 years, not that we learned from it.

Johann Cryuff - had the right to be arrogant.

Diego Maradona - an appalling cheat, but...

Lev Yashin - taught all goalkeepers after him how to do it.

 

[Ninja Elephant]

Razvan Rat - A disgrace of a left back, he does so little defending it's amazing. Bombs forward all match and is flair at its best, truly amazing.

Gianfranco Zola - So good I went to Swindon on a cold and rainy tuesday night to see him play a testimonial match. He scored a hattrick and spent half an hour signing every autograph for the kids, what a top bloke.

David Beckham - I actually love Becks. Brilliant footballer, and for me the best English player I've ever seen.

Marek Jankulovski - Another left back, but absolute legend, CHARGEEE.

Paolo Di Canio - Nutter / legend. Him catching the ball at Everton with Gerrard seriously injured is easily the best bit of sportsmanship I've ever seen in my life. Pushing over Alcock is worth a mention too.
