Tom Hark

listening to the game on SCR today, YET ANOTHER club uses the anthem "Tom Hark" by Brighton legends 'The Piranhas' whenever they score or enter the pitch... * yawn *.....

Anyone know whatever became of the band after they split? I've clocked John Helmer in town a couple of times over the years.

I'd love to know where they are - I'd love to see a reunion gig! Last time I saw them was at the Apollo in London - great gig.

Helen (swoon!) is in London and was a Uni lecturer on pop kulture type things last I heard

As for Tom Hark - well, personally I always treat it as a mark of respect (they played it just before Socceroos v. Reggae Boyz at the MadStad last Sunday. No other obvious reason aye?) :smokin:

I used to swoon over Helen as well, Tom.

I remember going up to some hole of an old warehouse to watch a gig in Camden once, just after femme fatale was released . I was convinced that was going to be a hit.

Ah this takes me back!! Didn't Nicky and the Dots become the Louder Animal Group?. What about Woodie and the Splinters, The Dodgems and the Golinski Brothers?

After the Piranhas didn't John Helmer form Pookiesnackenburger? I think he then became a full-time songwriter but I'm not sure. I think Reg went back to his old trade (he was an electrician), Dick played for several other bands including Birds with Ears and I haven't a clue about Zut Alors. An old schoolfriend of mine owns the Greys now, I must ask him whether Bob still picks up glasses there for a few, er, bob a week.

Good bloke that Chris Beaumont.
Not quite sure if Bob does any work in their anymore but he is seen propping up the bar pretty regularly whilst enjoying the odd game of backgammon.

He is indeed, although when I knew him at school he was called Chris Taylor! He used to be an actor and had to change his name to Beaumont as there already was a Chris Taylor.

Helen singing Femme Fatale was a bit special aye? Used to follow them around all these great pubs that don't exist anymore like the Buccaneer and the Alhambra. And seem to recall the Chefs actually made it onto Top Of The Pops once (well Helen did anyways - maybe it was a post-Chefs band?). Whatever, she was dressed up as a cowgirl for what probably seemed like a very good reason at the time.

Loads of good stuff at this link for those old punks of a certain age

Brilliant site! :salute: My daughter loves the Dodgems " Lord Lucan is missing".....She used to bellow it out when she was younger, much to her Mothers annoyance! :lolol:

I also used to swoon over Helen McCookerybook. I put the Chefs on at the pub I promoted in London in the early 80s and it was love at first sight! I still have fond memories of sitting with her at the bar after the show chatting over a few pints until the early hours....heady days.

I rebooked them straight away, even though they only got about 30 punters in! 24 Hours was superb - I think that some slightly bigger label licensed it from Attrix and did a big push on it but to no avail.
