The hot debate in our office today is whether 'septic' is an offensive term for an American. Would you use it to a American's face (assuming he or she's not a southerner of course).

Would you be offended if someone called you a Limey? Do you think that Mick, Jock and Taff are offensive terms?

The debate's hotting up.

If you called an american a septic, half of them are so bloody stupid they'd have no idea what your are talking about and the othe rhalf would shoot you for dissing them and their familly.

Personally I wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about either!

Taff is fine though...

My dad calls you lot poms - do you find that offensive? - I think it is....

I'd never call an american a yank or a septic to their face...lived amongst too many of them to know how daft and volatile they are....

Septic? Only septic I know is what possibly happens to your finger when you cut it :)
Never heard of it being an insult to Yanks before!

Stick and Stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

Its just names, anyone with an ounce of savvy would ignore people who said it.

Why o why do people get so wound up about it?

Not Luton! Thank God
"Septic"-tank = yank

It's all about situations. If you know someone and know they dont mind being called "Taffy" then its fine. But if you approach someone Scottish you don't know (or know doesn't like being called it) and call them a sweaty (sock) then I think they might be a little bit pissed off.

I think the only time I have ever heard the phrase "limey" is on Dads Army!!

Does it depend whether Yank(ee) is offensive? Personally, I'd have said not, I know Americans who call themselves yanks, but there are people here who say yank is offensive.

I have no problem with pom and don't mind being called Limey

If I went up to a Jock and called him sweaty I think I'd get punched!
