It might also be handy for the poor saps chained to their desk at work!

Not the worst analogy, other than The Plank of The Pretty Ladies is 7kms long.
At no point is the gradient shallower than the steepest part of Ditching Beacon.

Point of order. I do not have Pinot winning at 6/1. I think he will win, but I prefer betting small amounts on longer odds. I can see no value for today as it's a nailed on GC stage.

Having ridden that climb I can tell you it is a BEAST. Went out for the first time it was used in a TdF stage and it nearly killed me riding up. That the pros rode it in about 12 minutes at the end of 100+ mile stage in sweltering heat made me realise how superhuman they are.
