Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
My nephew (9) came home with a horrific letter from school yesterday.
Apparently drug dealers are setting up shop outside city centre schools as the cops have forced them off the seafront.
Kids as young as 9 have been offered 'free' drugs in an attempt to lure them into the habit.
The school also claims to know that smoking crack is rife amonst 10-13 yr olds !
What the f*** is our country coming to ??
What are we doing about these scum dealers ?

Now now, come on, you know all criminals are victims too. They just need a bit of love and understanding and they'll see the error of their ways and become useful members of society. What do you think we should do? Arrest them and lock them up? What good do you think that will do? Fascist.

It's grim up north ... unless you're in Leeds, the British city of the year

By Matthew Beard

11 September 2003

The city of Leeds has won an accolade from arguably the most discerning travellers in the land.

Although it is still considered unkind on the eye by some, the Yorkshire hub cannot be beaten in terms of pure enjoyment, according to readers of Condé Nast Traveller magazine, who voted it their favourite British city of the year.

Visitors found that they could enjoy such shopping meccas as the upmarket department store Harvey Nichols, or the country's first Marks & Spencer, and stay in one of several boutique hotels such as 42 The Calls.

They were also impressed with the surrounding Yorkshire countryside, which contrasted with a vibrant nightlife driven by about 200 bars, clubs and restaurants in the city centre.

The city beat London - still popular among business travellers - and last year's winner, Edinburgh, which was relegated to third place.

Sarah Miller, editor of Traveller, said that she was not surprised at the choice of the magazine's readers, who are typically professionals living in the South-east with a large travel budget.

She said: "Maybe people felt that they didn't want to spend time in London.

"They are happy instead to take a drive up the M1 and visit Leeds for the shopping, restaurants and nightlife." The poll of 82,000 readers opened in mid-March, shortly before the start of the war in Iraq and the outbreak of the Sars virus in Hong Kong.

Amid such uncertainty the magazine's readers, many of whom are the bearers of well-stamped passports, preferred to stay closer to home.

Italy was voted the favourite foreign country and received the accolade for best foreign city (Rome) and best overseas leisure hotel (Hotel Cipriani in Venice). Safety was a primary factor in the increased popularity of holidays in the Indian Ocean and Caribbean, Ms Miller said.

The nearest to a perfect score of 100 in the 23 readers' award categories was given for the charms of the Pangkor Laut Resort spa complex on a private island covered in virgin rainforest in the Straits of Malacca, in Malaysia, which scored 92 per cent.

I'd agree with taht, all those cities bar London in my opinion have more to other than Brighton and Hove the commuter city of the south.

How long before all the gun problems associated with the drugs will hit Brighton? Will get the drug gangs from London down here with the yuppies having aturf war over who supplies the "trendies" with their weekend entertainment.

London by the Sea could never be more apt.

The gun problem is already here, its been here since the Triads moved into Little Preston Street.

This town is becoming shit and its been turning since about '99. Unfortuntely the council didn't do enough early on to combat the problem and are now paying the price.
We need more Bobbies down on the beach, just to show a presence, those ones on bikes spend more time talking to f***ing tourists than anything else.

On a side note i was walking along the beach about a month ago at midnightish and walked through a group of dealers, now i don't have aproblem with one guy trying to sell me weed but two of them in a matter of seconds questioning why i didn't want any of their shit ganja and why did my mate look at him like that was a tad over the top. We met up with a few mates and walked back along the other way when they tried to sell me weed again, twats.

I really cannot believe that about Leeds. Most of the ladies I know who want to do serious shopping go to Manchester or Sheffield.

As for the clubs and nightlife, well you have read about the Leeds United players and Rugby players..................

It all depends on where you go. I've been in Leeds 2 years now and never seen any trouble in town. The football and rugby players tend to go to the real shiteholes like Majestyks and Creation, the sort of places that see trouble kicking off in many towns and cities.

Near the corn exchange are lots of nice late bars, which mostly have a laid back, relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere. I like going out in these sorts of places in Leeds.

All towns, cities have cr@p nightclubs like Majestiks, we have the Event and Creation always kicks off in those two but they do attract tossers.

The last time I went out in Leeds for a drink with work colleagues I was walking down The Headrow (equivalent to Western Road in Brighton) and I was very uneasy. Just a group of 8 ladies walking together and some lad just ran up and shouted directly in my face. I don't know what he shouted or why. I found the whole atmosphere quite intimidating.

Only a mile away from the city centre in Chapeltown, shootings are quite regular occurance.

Its a shame that incidents like that in many towns and cities can really shape opinions of places. The fool in question should be ashamed of his behaviour. Perhaps I'm just lucky that I've not had any unfortunate experiences in Leeds, but I do genuinely think there are nice parts of the city centre that are fun to be in at night.

Chapeltown - now that is a scary place. However to balance it up, there are also lots of nice areas to live in in Leeds.

I guess on the whole, the place is no different to many others. I enjoy living here and I guess that's what matters to me, and should be the criteria for anyone choosing where to live (that they like it, not that I like it).
