What do you do when you have the two favourites playing their final group games and with the possibility they could both go out? It's quite simple really - you appoint a Spanish ref for the Germany game and a German ref for the Spain game.
OK, so they could both still be eliminated but you can be sure it won't be by anything like a controvertial penalty (and there were fairly strong penalty claims for both Denmark and Croatia turned down). Think about it - neither ref would want to be accused of deliberately giving an advantage to his home country by causing their most dangerous opponents to lose. It could not only mean the end of his involvement in the Euro's but maybe also his international career. I don't think the German ref who disallowed the goal for England against Portugal ever reffed again.
Whatever it takes, Uefa are going to get the final they want.
