With poor current form, and speculation over Poyet's future and transfer signings. I feel it's worth mentioning one or two points from the excellent soccernomics book by Simon kuper.
Firstly transfer fees themselves are no indicator of long term success. Having seen numerous debates on NSC about the merits of Murrey/CMS, the biggest gripe is the disparency between the amount paid and received for both players. Over the years Football has witnessed several big money signings which have resulted badly, Torres at Chelsea/ Carroll at Liverpool being two of the biggest examples over the past two seasons.
Equally replacing managers like socks also statistically DOES NOT improve league position long term. As frequently having to pay two salaries, simultaneously while settlements are being agreed. Affects the biggest single contributor to success, players salaries.
Personally I'm not Poyet's biggest fan or critic. His achievement in gaining promotion to the championship although creditable was only in line with what other league one teams were spending, and currently despite massive financial support this season looks like an underachievement.
On a personal level, his support of Suarez was at best ill advised. Although to his credit, he appears happy at the club (signed long contract/ doesn't tout for other jobs) and has improved certain aspects of the playing style ( final third accepted)
It may be his loyalty towards his coaching staff needs looking at. The club has changed hugely over the past two seasons, with nutritionists and various other behind the scene support staff. The championship is the fourth richest domestic league in Europe, and retaining your best mate or, a former club captain. Who's principal asset appears to be generating spirit/ haranguing officials is way to primitive to succeed at this level.
Having participated in coaching for a number of years I'm staggered that despite this off the pitch investment. The first team coaching has not kept pace.
Poyet has like all managers, has good and bad points. It remains to be seen if his loyalty to his friends, out ways his duty to our club.
