Former England boss Terry Venables is set to return Down Under after signing a one-year deal to coach Newcastle in the new Australian Premier League.
Venables was manager of the Australian national side for the 1998 World Cup where they missed out on the finals by losing a two-legged play-off to Iran.
The deal is subject to Newcastle's inclusion in a proposed elite domestic league, which would start in July 2005.
Venables, 61, will visit Newcastle in November to begin pre-season planning.
The former Barcelona, Tottenham and Leeds manager still has a high profile in the southern hemisphere.
Newcastle's general manager Jock Graham told the Sydney Morning Herald that Venables' arrival would be the most significant point in the club's four-year history.
"He is a coach of the highest calibre and and we are delighted to have him in charge at United for the inaugural Australian Premier League," Jack said.
"It tells you that owner Con Constantine is serious about the next five years."
The Australian Soccer Association is scheduled to reveal the successful applicants for the APL in September.
