Supermarket chain Asda is offering Swiss people free eye tests following England's controversial exit from the Euro 2004 championships.

The company said it followed the decision by Swiss referee Urs Meier to disallow Sol Campbell's late goal that looked set to clinch victory for England over Portugal.

The company said it hoped the move would prevent future refereeing bungles by the Swiss.

"Lets face it, we were robbed," said David Rutley, Asda's director of financial services.

"Sol obviously scored. Well, it was obvious to everyone apart from the Swiss referee, who clearly needs his eyes testing.

"To stop this happening again, we've decided to offer anyone who is Swiss a free eye test.

"We've also written to Urs Meier telling him if he would like to take us up on the offer, we will throw glasses in as well.

Asda promised any Swiss an eye test for free at one of its 68 in-store opticians between now and July 2.
