Somewhere over there...
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says David Beckham will retain his place in the World Cup ahead of winger Aaron Lennon, who impressed against Belarus.
When asked who should play on the right Eriksson said: "Are you saying I should play Lennon instead of Beckham?

"Lennon does his damage on the right but Beckham also does his damage on the right. How many crosses does he put in?

"I think everybody agrees with the starting 11. I know the team and you would pick the same team."

England have two friendlies this week, against Hungary on Tuesday and Jamaica on Saturday, before they play their opening World Cup against Paraguay on 10 June.

Eriksson, who has never substituted or dropped Beckham, has said he will start both games with the team he expects to use in the World Cup opener against Paraguay.

"If Beckham is fit, if Frank Lampard is fit, if Steven Gerrard is fit and if Joe Cole is fit, they should start," added Eriksson.

"The fact is that all four midfielders are in great form and they are all in excellent condition.

"It's not like before Japan when Beckham was 70%, half-injured.

"They are all 100% fit. They all did the fitness tests and were much better than two years ago and there was a huge difference to four years ago."

Despite the question marks over Beckham's fitness four years ago, Eriksson insisted he was right to play the midfielder in the 2002 World Cup.

"In Japan, Beckham deserved to play even though he was not 100%. We did not have Lennon in Japan.

"I am sure Lennon could play as a second striker in the last 20 minutes. He would come on, take the ball and run."

f***ing KNOB END!!!!!!!!!

I hope McClaren has sense to play Lennon on the right and drop Beckham altogether and have Shaun Wright Phillips as backup right midfielder

Thats the problem certain players will not be dropped under the current manager team.

Unlucky for us the next manager is in that team.

I would rather play Beckham than Lennon, Sven is correct in saying he could be very effective coming off the bench for the last 20 mins or so. Sven also has substituted Beckham, I remember him being taken off at the last World Cup for (I think) Kieron Dyer.

OR, Sven thinks Beckham is the best player in that position - as most other people do. It's so not controversial and I can't see who the current management team won't drop. The team virtually picks itself.

Fair enough at the moment that maybe the case - but can you ever see Sven taking off Beckham ala Figo in euro 04

That's f***ing bullshit. I really hate all this anti Beckham for no reason shit. He's been one of Madrid's best players for the last two seasons, why would you want to drop him? Lennon is a brilliant player and will do well for us off the bench this summer and will take over the the right side in the near future, but Beckham has been consistantly good in that position for 8 years now, that's got to count for something

Didn't Beckham get player of the season at Real this year?

To be fair I think Beckham must know this is really his last chance and willl surely perform better than he did at Euro 2004...

Still the best man for the position IMO

yes, Beckham can cross the ball and score free kicks, but Lennon is fast and has flair and can shoot, pass, cross, dribble etc.

Lennon = exciting football
Beckham = Dull football

Exciting football = good football
Dull Football = Bad football

Lennon's final product is w@nk,

Beckham is the best dead ball expert in the world, and also puts in delightful crosses to suit the forward, either in the air to Crouch, or along the floor for Owen and Rooney. The fact he is soo much more accurate eliminates the height advantage of defenders against players with world class movement

The biggest problem with England is Sven doe snot pick 11 players that gel as a team - he's more intrested picking the Footballers who's who of stars rather than getting a team gelling together, but hey he's damned if does damned if he doesn't.

Truth is you cannot leave Beckham out, I think he will come good this time - Gerrard however is a major concern.

Spot on.

"If Beckham is fit, if Frank Lampard is fit, if Steven Gerrard is fit and if Joe Cole is fit, they should start," added Eriksson.

This is the bit that worries me - if that's the starting midfield for every game, we're out. No other decent manager in world football would play 4-4-2 with four attacking players in midfield ... utter suicide.

True, I could take that, as at least there's a balance there. However, I fear Crouch will play, as will that midfield; bad on both counts.

Nail on head.

Cole can run at defenders, Beckham supplies service to the front two (or one!?)

I have no problem with Beckham starting as long as he plays sensible. He worries me when he starts trying to do to much, chasing lost causes, clattering into players, over reaching with his passes and getting drawn inside. He needs to stay calm.

Beckham's getting tired...running around like a chook with his head cut of and never doing much, but my question remains what or who are we going to replace him with?? Ronald McDonald?

My arguement is - Alf Ramsey picked players that gelled as a unit and played as a team- we won teh world cup, not obviously the best and biggest stars.

In 1990 Bobby robson did the same thing to an extent - the team was not packed with stars but played well as a unit and if it hadn't been for a penalty shoot out we would have won the competition.

Sven on the other hand picks the presses best 11 and they do not work all that well as a unit. Hence we will see the usual startled rabbit as our one dimensional approach falls apart.

Lets just hope i am wrong
