I know he's in a no win situation, but does anyone else think that Sven was totally gutless in dropping James last night? After publicly defending him and saying he was sure he would play the next game, his decision comes across as a pathetic attempt to curry favour with supporters and smacks of desperation.

The same might be said of his decision to play Cole and Bridge which was something he said he'd never do.

a lot of respect for dropping james in my opinion. if he hadn't the question would be 'what does paul robinson have to do to get in the team'

Great first post, will probably get a few opinions on the matter!

I think he's buggered whichever way he goes. If he keeps James in the team people accuse him of baulking tough decisions and being a poor judge of a goalkeeper's confidence and ability at international level. If he drops him, he gets accused of not standing by his man and giving in to the press.

What's he supposed to do? We won for f*ck's sake!!

Sven suggested that no player was guaranteed a place in an interview on Five Live yesterday morning.
Books must be open now on how long left for Beckham and Owen!

I think James' confidence was shattered by some of the stuff written about him in the rag tops. Sven saw that and made the correct decision.

James should NEVER have made the England set up. He's never made it with a top end club (Liverpool anyone?). He seems to have been groomed for Seaman's role like a teacher pet for ages. Finally the manager is asking the right questions. "Why are you in the team James?"

That's a load of rubbish, Lammy. All keepers make mistakes from time to time. What about the blinder he played at home to Turkey last season? Fact is we don't have an over abundance of top notch keepers at the moment.

If he'd stuck by James then perhaps he would have earnt even more respect? Then again, James is total cat wee. Just trying to see both sides of the argument.

Simply not good enough, I mean we all remember how good we were before that meddling foreigner came along.

Did anyone else get the impression Martin Tyler was desparate for England to lose or draw last night. From the moment we got the second goal all you heard was ..." remember Austria.." " We are playing far too adventurous football..." " Lets not get carried away..." I counted 6 times he siad " Lets not forget the Austrian game..."

At no time did he say....we are playing very well...passing the ball accurately...pressurising their shit defence...not giving them an inch on THEIR HOME GROUND:angry:

If someone had said, the first two difficult away games ( lets face it those are the two teams that would challenge us) we would get 4 points out of 6, you would have taken it.

Sven is doing a fantastic job as are the players...I say to the press GET OFF THEIR BACKS.

Spot on. There are sections of the British media who seem to love it when we lose, and revel in putting the team, the manager and the supporters down. It does my head in.

When the second goal went in Tyler was almost speechless. I was punching the air and was well pleased, and I am an Ireland supporter too!

Tyler and Keys were both gutted that they could not read out Sven's obituary that they had spent all week preparing.

Its the way we lose!

Brazil, France and Portugal and even the draw againgst Austria were all games we, we threw away. And in all were the result of poor mistakes a third division player would have embarressed by.

Is that Sven fault?

His negative tactics when we are clearly on top does not help, especially when at the moment our defence is not that solid. It ca

Brazil battered us in the second half and we hardly got a kick as I recall.

Brazil at that time were the best team in the world and went on to win the tournement, we quite clearly were not.

Sven's fault?

France game was very unfortunate as we played well for most of the game, but let it slip in the last few minutes with a piece of sheer genious from Zidane and complete idiocy from James.

Svens fault?

Portugal we were under the cosh from the moment we scored our first and the goal was coming. In fact we went behind in that game and managed to scrape an equaliser when being totally outplayed. We had a goal dissallowed somewhat contraversially, Portugal went on to lose in the final.

Svens fault?

Austria, we went two nil up...cruising it. The forward scored a remarkable free kick ( as Beckham has done many a time) and James let in a soft goal. We had chances to wrap it up before then but Sven doesn't kick the ball...Smith and Owen do.

Svens fault?

If I were Sven I would say f*** the lot of you ungrateful bastards. I have produced a team capable of competing on the world stage. When I took over we were a shambles..I took a team to Germany and won 5-1 on German soil...what did you have before? Keegan...waste of space....Vennables, a crook and waste of space...erm...Robson...one semi final...Hoddle....yeah right.
Ok then...replace me with one of yours...who shall we say...David O'leary? Martin O'Neil? Mick McCarthy? Who else. Even top Premiershite teams have gone away from the "british managers"..Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea...sucessful sides with foriegn managers.

This is an English disease..we have something good and all we do is bitch about it. Sven this and Sven that. Who cares if he is a philandering bloke..if he can get us to Finals of competitions then great. Lets not forget, since we have been playing international football, we have won 1 world cup...that is it in nigh on 100 years.

What games were you watching? What I saw was us (a technically inferior team to each of those) being pressurised because the other team was behind. We didn't sit back, they pushed us back.

After being criticised for being too negative in those games Sven is now criticised for NOT sitting on the 2 goal lead in Austria and pushing for a 3rd! The bloke can't win.

Now I think the players have scored a bit of a petulant own goal with this 'wont talk to the media' rubbish, but after seeing some of the trash printed this week and hearing Keys and company after the game last night I'm starting to have more and more sympathy with Sven and his team. The whole country is NOT against Eriksson, just members of the press who are up to their usual tricks to try and get the manager changed
